Germany has a new government; Australians go to the polls, and their decision as to who will be in the driving seat in Canberra will have consequences far beyond the country’s borders; Elliot Ackerman and James Stavridis have published the dystopian novel 2034, foreseeing the Third World War fought between China and the US with disastrous consequences for the entire human race. It is the best piece of cautionary fiction in a long time.

In this rather lengthy episode I tell you about what transformed me into the political animal I have become. In this introductory talk I spill the beans on what it was like to grow up in East Germany, and how the fall of the Berlin Wall impacted my life. After all, I was only 11 when the communist East crumbled - it was my own very personal political awakening.

Why I write

Why I write

Following my recent piece on joergtretow.com on the Electoral College and voting rights in America, a friend of mine dropped me a line asking, “Why duo you write?” Initially I was taken aback not quite knowing what to say and how to respond. Then, I did what I have been doing frequently in this pandemic, relaxing in my bathtub with a Glass of red wine sitting next to me on the shelve and some jazz music allowing my mind to wander and roam freely. So I came back to the question and thought what a great idea for another podcast. Well then, here is my modest answer to a weighty question.

Donald Trump a Jacksonian?

Donald Trump a Jacksonian?

Not so long ago, the 45th president of the United States fancied himself a Jacksonian, referring to the 7th president of the republic as his role model in public life. Relying on splendid historiography by H. W. Brands, I discuss this very question in this podcast. So, then, are there any similarities between Trumpism and the Jacksonian era?

US presidential transition revisited

US presidential transition revisited

It is a tale of two cities; it is a tale of two nations; in fact, it is the story of two parallel universes. With the GSA having officially ascertained the election on Monday night, and with the formal transition now in full swing, where are we now?

US presidential election: A post-mortem

US presidential election: A post-mortem

After four days on Adrenalin, coffee and tobacco, it was time for a major comedown on Saturday night helped along by two bottles of red wine. Now, I am ready for my first postmortem on the election. How and why did Biden win? Why was this election not a repudiation of Trumpism, and what lies ahead for both political parties in the months and years to come? I also discuss why keeping a close watch on the transition is so essential.

Morning or mourning in America?

Morning or mourning in America?

Morning or mourning in America? Welcome to the twilight zone of political uncertainty as counting continues in four swing States that will decide the election. However, this has not been the much anticipated repudiation of Trumpism and must therefore have greatly disappointed Democrats and progressives throughout the country. What went wrong for Biden and the Democrats?

Queensland State election: Labor escapes a severe sunburn in the sunshine State

Queensland State election: Labor escapes a severe sunburn in the sunshine State

Queensland has spoken, and by the looks of it the electorate has returned a Labor government. However, because this election took place in the midst of a pandemic, an unprecedented number of postal votes has yet to be counted. Even so, the ABC has called the election for the ALP, though it is unclear whether the party can form government in its own right or will have to rely on Green support. In this episode I give listeners a quick rundown of the results and share my passion for Queensland political history.

It’s the polling stupid

It’s the polling stupid

While shrouded in mystery, journalists love them; politicians obsess about them and the public craves them too. In the run up to the US presidential election, 4 polls are being published each day. In this episode I discuss my personal take on polling and point listeners to valuable sources of information on the subject.
