Friday Family Film Night: ANATOMY OF A FALL review

In which the Mister and I check out ANATOMY OF A FALL (2023), which is still in theaters, coming soon to streaming and to buy/rent on Prime Video.  From director Justine Triet and a script by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, the film follows Sandra (Sandra Hüller) who at the start of the film is being interviewed by a student but then has to reschedule because of her husband.  Shortly after, her partially blind son, Daniel (an outstanding performance by young actor, Milo Machado-Graner), comes home and finds his father dead in front of their home.  After an investigation, Sandra soon finds herself facing homicide charges.  From here the film turns into a legal drama as witnesses and experts all weigh in on what happened.  Daniel insists on testifying but finds himself conflicted and confides in the court appointed monitor, Marge, who gives him some good advice.  This is a five time Oscar nominated film for Best Original Screenplay (Justine Triet and Arthur Harari), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Sandra Hüller), Best Director (Justine Triet), Best Achievement in Film Editing (Laurent Sénéchal) and Best Picture of the Year nominee at the upcoming Academy Awards.  This film clocks in at 2 h 31 m and is rated  R.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Friday Family Film Night: MAY DECEMBER review

Friday Family Film Night: MAY DECEMBER review

In which the Mister and I check out MAY DECEMBER (2023), which we caught on Netflix.  From director Todd Haynes and a script by Samy Burch and story by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik, the film is loosely based on the Mary Kay Letourneau story from the 1990s.  In this version, actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is going to spend time with a couple who endured in spite of the scandal that their relationship created. Grace (Julianne Moore) first meets Joe when he is a 12 year old and proceeds to have a sexual relationship with him.  She ends up in jail but when she gets out Joe is there and they marry.  Years later, Elizabeth goes to shadow the family as she wants to get more insight into the players of this story.  Joe is now an adult (played by Charles Melton) and over the period of time she is there and through Elizabeth's POV we get access to a small part of the story and the audience can infer many things from the scenes presented.  Absolutely brilliant performances from the leads and a compelling story make this a worthwhile investment.  This is an Original Screenplay nominee at the upcoming Oscars.  This film clocks in at 1 h 57 m and is rated  R.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Friday Family Film Night: EXmas review

Friday Family Film Night: EXmas review

In which Kid 2 joins me in reviewing EXmas (2023), a Freevee original movie directed by Jonah Feingold, from a screenplay by Dan Steele.  This is the story of Graham (Robbie Amell) who decides he'll surprise his family for Christmas after initially saying he wouldn't be coming home for the holidays.  Much to his dismay, on arrival he realizes his family has invited his ex-fiancee, Ali (Leighton Meester), and soon they engage in a battle of one-upmanship to see who the family loves best.  A weak script and no chemistry between the leads makes this a PASS.  This film clocks in at 1 h and 33 m and is rated PG-13.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Friday Family Film Night: THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER review

In which the Mister and I check out THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER (1954), which we caught on the TCM app but you can catch on Max and to buy/rent on Amazon Prime Video.  From director William Keighley and from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's stage play, the screenplay credit for the film goes to Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein.  The film follows Sheridan Whiteside (a MAGNIFICENT Monty Woolley), a very popular and revered critic who is making a quick stop with his assistant, Maggie (Bette Davis in a comedic turn), in a Midwestern town to have dinner with the Stanleys (Billie Burke and Grant Mitchell).  While entering the Stanley home, Monty slips on some ice and hurts his hip.  In a huff, he takes over the Stanley house and proceeds to terrorize the Stanley family (although later he eases up and even befriends the Stanley children, June and Richard, played by Elizabeth Fraser and Russell Arms).  However, when Bert Jefferson (Richard Travis) enters the picture and Maggie decides she's in love with him and willing to resign her employment with Sheridan, he goes on the offensive quickly with a crazy scheme to break up the 2 lovebirds.  Will love prevail?  Will Christmas be ruined?  You'll have to watch but we don't think the film disappoints and HIGHLY RECOMMEND.  The film clocks in at 1 h 52 m and is not rated on IMDB but think it's definitely a G for general audiences.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Friday Family Film Night: GAMER review

In which the Mister, Uncle Jay and I check out GAMER (2009) from writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.  Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) is an egregiously rich and powerful gaming creator whose games deal in exploitation - whether as a user or as a surrogate immersed in a shooter world where the stakes are high.  A mediocre script that missed an opportunity to really deep dive into some interesting ethical questions and social commentary.  The best part of the watch was hanging with Uncle Jay!  Check out PADDINGTON 2 instead.  The film clocks in at 1 h 35 m and is rated R.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
