Episode 22: Normalize Black Gun Ownership

Episode 22: Normalize Black Gun Ownership

This is the year I actually expressed my second Amendment rights and it was scary as hell.

If you would've told me that I would be a proud gun owner ten years ago, I may have looked you in the face and started laughing and then went on about my business. I don't think I've ever been adamant about owning a gun, but I have always been of the school of thought that you should always be prepared to defend yourself.

I have a candid conversation with my Hubby about the importance of protecting yourself and your family and why we need to normalize Black gun ownership. I share my thoughts on buying my first gun and how you can prepare yourself to get your first one.

Episode 19: Seven Ways to incorporate wellness into your daily routine

Episode 19: Seven Ways to incorporate wellness into your daily routine

On this episode of The Soa Inspired Podcast, I share seven ways to incorporate wellness into your daily routine.

I was listening to the Michelle Obama podcast on Spotify, phenomenal by the way, and she was speaking with her guest, award winning journalist Michelle Rogers about their thoughts and feelings surround the pandemic and protests that have taken over much of the year. One quote from that episode that resonated with me and will continue to for probably the rest of my life is this, "Don't reach for normal, reach for better."

DON'T REACH FOR NORMAL, REACH FOR BETTER.

Whew! Let that sink in.

Don't reach for normal, reach for better.

That's what wellness is all about, the intention and decision to reach for better in our lives one good choice at a time.

Seven ways to incorporate wellness in your daily life include: getting more sleep, drinking water, and releasing negative energy.

Take a listen to these and more ways to incorporate wellness into your daily life on this episode of The Soa Inspired Podcast.

Episode 18: Be Bold at the Polls with Representative Valencia Stovall

Episode 18: Be Bold at the Polls with Representative Valencia Stovall

Whew! Y'all alright out there? We have entered the second half of the wildest year and decade we've ever experienced. Not to mention, it's an election year and many of our elder community leaders are leaving us to join the Ancestors.

I had the opportunity to sit down with my local representative to talk civics, community, and "Jungle elections." She is in a highly contested race for a Senate seat left vacant by Jon Isakson which is currently occupied by Kelly Loeffler, plus 21 other candidates.

Rep. Valencia Stovall is a native of southeast Atlanta and mother of two who has a strong diverse background in finance, entrepreneurship, and public policy, currently residing in Forest Park. In 2012, she was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and has been a bi-partisan leader for eight years, working with both liberals and conservatives to develop a $45 million grant for local governments, authored and passed legislation to protect special needs students, authored legislation to reform Georgia’s education funding formula, and co-sponsored over a dozen bills to improve the lives of Georgians that have been signed into law.  She has served on over twenty-one committees, state commissions and non-profit boards. She has earned respect for standing firm on her beliefs even when it's unpopular and strives to do her part in making Georgia the best place to live, work, and play through economic development, education transformation and voter empowerment. She is a U.S. Senate candidate for the November 3, 2020 special election to represent Georgia as one of 2 senators.

Episode 17: A Year Black as the Night is Long and how to be a better Ally

Episode 17: A Year Black as the Night is Long and how to be a better Ally

Black is King...

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

I return from Summer break having experienced Beyonce dropping the most amazing and blackest piece of art we've ever had the privilege to enjoy. We are just getting started with what can be viewed as the reignition of the Black Civil Rights Movement after the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the passing of some of our great Black leaders and Black Action Heros. Plus we are experiencing our very own Black Plague. It's been one tough summer and year, y'all!

In this episode of The Soa Inspired Podcast, I share my experiences navigating Summer 2020, which just felt heavy and offer a space to recognize my feelings around it all. I share my experiences dealing with a non-diverse organization that failed at supporting minorities and uplifting their employees and how other companies can continue uplifting their #BlackLivesMatter Allyship:

  • Stay in tune
  • Stay present
  • Check your privilege and privilege of others
  • Support blackness without coping the culture
  • Know your role

How to advocate for yourself - plus my traumatic birthing story

How to advocate for yourself - plus my traumatic birthing story

Every ending is a new beginning. In the season finale of The Soa Inspired Podcast, I share my traumatic birthing experience and 5 ways to advocate for yourself.

They say when a child is born, so is the mother.

I have been a mother for almost 365 days as of the recording of this podcast. As I was navigating my pregnancy, I decided that I want to be the type of mother equipped to take care of a smart, kind, strong, compassionate human being and prayed that God would equip me with the patience, strength, wisdom, and love to be their mother. I knew I wanted to be present. I knew I wanted to be understanding. I knew I wanted to be all the things that my mom is for me and be better at the things that my mom fell short on when I was growing up.

My whole pregnancy could be described as perfect for me, however, my birthing experience was nothing like I planned, dreamed, or imagined. I was planning to have a natural waterbirth with the support of my husband, mother, midwife, and L&D nursing staff, but my experience was far from perfect.

What do you do when medical professionals ignore your wishes, call security on your husband, and disrespect your mother while you are in active labor? How do you overcome the trauma of not being listened to and advocated for while learning how to navigate life postpartum?

I want my story of vulnerability  to empower another birthing woman to advocate for herself. I hope my story prevents another statistic of maternal mortality and that a birthing mother's partner knows that the most loving thing they can do for their partner is use their voice to fight for the person they love.

Take a listen to the season finale of The Soa Inspired podcast.

Episode 10: The Seed

Episode 10: The Seed

The Parable of the Seed.

The mustard seed is one of the tiniest seeds on Earth, but it bares leaves large enough to shade the birds according to the Bible.

Mark 4:30 The Mustard Seed

Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

In the Age of 'Rona and as we begin the month of April and the start of National Financial Literacy month, I can't help but to think about the seeds I am planting for my family, my self, and my future. As much as we want to take a break and chill under the covers most days, the work we do today is a seed planted towards our future, but what are you doing to plant, nurture, grow, cultivate, and harvest that seed so that you can reap the fruits of your labor in the future?

I share my thoughts on planting seeds and pushing through when you need the most motivation.

In your planting season, you need faith that the universe gave you the tools you need to be successful, you need to plan so that you have a clear idea on what you want to accomplish and how you will accomplish it, your discipline is how good habits are formed and the routine you develop is how you are going to become consistent. But once you have all that, it is your belief that everything you are doing for your highest good and best self and in taking growing that seed is enough. But you know, "faith without works" is dead, what action are you putting behind your plan and your routine? Finally, how are you reaping the benefits of your work? What are the fruits of your labor? It is important to take the time to analyze your results so you can repeat and build a self sustaining machine.

Mark 4:26 The Growing Seed

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Episode 3: The Love Episode and Why I pray for my husband

I asked Google the definition of love and I wasn't satisfied with what it said.
