Once upon a time, there was a child. They lay sleeping in their room, dreaming of whatever little kids dream of. Without warning, without knowing why. The child suddenly woke up staring at the foot of the bed. There, right there inside their room stood a man. Or, well, not exactly a man. It looked like a man, a short man with a distinctive hat. A very distinctive Fedora style hat.

Folklore is full of stories of Little People known by many names. The Wompanoag tribe call them pukwudgies. The Comanche call them nunnupi. In Scandinavia they’re called nisse. In Great Britain, Ireland, and Scotland there are fae, pixies, tylwyth teg, and broonies. And those of us from regions settled by the Spanish or Portuguese, anywhere from the Philippines to the Caribbean, have duendes.

El Cucuy
Every culture since the beginning of time has horrific stories they tell their children. These stories are often intended to be cautionary tales, ways to keep children safe. Don't trust strangers, they may be fae and take you away. Don't get too close to the river, ghosts may pull you under. Don't wander in the woods, a witch may try to eat you.
One such story, common across Spanish and Portuguese speaking regions, is that of El Cucuy. This creature is known by many names. Whether you call it La Cuca, El Coco, or El Cucuy, the moral of the story is the same. You'd better behave or something terrible will happen.
