I'm Not Afraid To Say I'm Not Enough For You | Strongman, Straight Talking and Mental Health with Nicola Buchan EP118

Today I have the pleasure of talking to the wonderfully straight talking Coach and Strongwoman Nicola Buchan who found herself in the limelight from a recent social media post.

That's how we first got in touch, but I wanted to know..

What are Nicola's thoughts on entering the gym for the first time?

How on earth did she go from strongwoman to the commentating the world strongman games?

Expect no punches pulled, with a conversation packed full of knowledge bombs for you to take away.

If you would like to follow Nicola you can find her on Tiktok @nb_coaching

Abused Homeless and Committed To Stay - Until A Security Guard Set Me Free From Domestic Violence With Izzie Snow - Superhero #117

Welcome back!
Its 2024 and I am hugely excited for this episode.
Firstly.. Trigger Warning!
This episode is a very frank and well told story of my guest Izzie's experiences, and includes mature themes including Sexual Abuse, Rape and Physical Abuse.
Its not graphic, but its honest and I wouldn't want it to take you by surprise. So please, be kind to yourself.
I met Izzie on TikTok some months ago, and we have become friends since. Izzie is a dog lover, with her own business Apocalypse Dogs.
Izzie is here to tell her story of unimaginable challenge in the hope to inspire and give strength to others.
We talk about how her challenges have lead to her being who she is today, what she would have done differently and what others could have done to help her escape from the horror she was in.
We also spend some time talking and finding more out about her assistance dog Arlo, and some of the incredible things he can do to help Izzie daily with her POTS and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.
I won't give anything else away but if you would like to message Izzie you can find her on Tiktok @apocalypsedogs

It's Time For The Good Men To Stand Up With Amanda Hanusch-Moore | VAWG Sergeant - North Yorkshire Police - Superhero #115

Welcome back!

November 25th was White Ribbon Day - what is that you ask?

White Ribbon Day is a day for many to stand up, speak up, and say no to violence against women.

There is a significant increase in violence, harassment, and abuse towards women and this campaign is intended to raise awareness about the prevalence of male violence against women, with the ribbon symbolizing “the idea of men giving up their arms”.

Active in over 60 countries, people are urgently called to work together to prevent violence and make sure communities and homes are made safe for everyone

Today I speak with North Yorkshire Police VAWG Sergeant Amanda Hanusch - Moore on what the police are doing to make our communities safer for women.

How working with men to tackle toxic and outdated views is extremely important, and a very frank conversation about changing the culture within the police force itself for the better.

A really interesting chat and I am very grateful for Amanda's time to do this.

*I realise I said Anna at the very end, for that I apologise!

If you have any questions on, or maybe you are interested in joining the White Ribbon movement you can contact Amanda on amanda.hanusch-moore@northyorkshire.police.uk

PLEASE - Do Not use this email address for anything urgent, please use 999/101 respectively

My Friend Saved My Life, Then Ended Up Taking Her Own - Lets Work Together To Stop Bad Men Abusing | Anthony Fuhrman - Man Strong Special | EP113

Hello and Welcome back to another Man Strong special where we take a look at some of the powerful episodes from my series 'Man Strong'.

Today see's me talk with Anthony, a former US Soldier, a World Class Strongman and former organiser of the CLASH Pro Series Strongman Event.

We touch on these experiences, but really what was at the forefront of the conversation was the story of his friend Rebecca.

Just a few weeks ago, Rebecca took her own life.

Rebecca was a Strongwoman athlete too, that's how they met and became good friends.

That's where todays chat comes in, before Rebecca passed she told the world via her social media that she had been abused by someone within the sport.

Even distancing herself was not enough to help her, and Anthony talks today about what he thinks we can do to help support those who are suffering,

vulnerable, but also what organisations can do to help curb abuse.

Its definitely not right, but it is very common.

I would say if you feel particularly sensitive about this subject please go ahead and find a good time for you to listen to this.

If you have any comments or questions please leave them through your podcast streaming service or DM on Instagram @thekindeststrongman

Stay Super!

I Throw Myself Into Everything I Do - That's Tough On My Family | Daniel Powell - Man Strong Special | EP 112

Hello and welcome back to a look into the short series I did a year ago looking into masculinity, and all things from a mans point of view.

I have know todays guest for around 4/5 years now, we always have fun when we catch up.

But rather than being a brew chat (It kind of is) I wanted to know what has driven Dan to have so many different jobs and passions over those years.

I met Dan as a personal trainer, he is now a stand up comedian and an award winning writer.

What was behind the changes?

What does the future look like?

What I wanted to know most?

What drove the changes he has made? What effect did they have on his family?

Dan has 3 kids, a loving wife and a house to pay for. Never mind COVID!

If you have ever thought about following a passion, but feel it would be too hard on your family. Listen up!

If you want to follow Dan on his road to the Edinburgh Fringe you can do so @dan_powell_comedy

Thankyou for listening and please subscribe / follow to be notified of further episodes!

Check out Youtube for the latest episodes too, and don't forget to give some oldies a listen!

Superhero #100 - Money And Titles Mean Nothing Against Health - Burning Out Made Me Unstoppable | Rebecca Day

Superhero #100 - Money And Titles Mean Nothing Against Health - Burning Out Made Me Unstoppable | Rebecca Day

In pursuit of a career, sometimes we have to make decisions that will affect more than just our role. Our life, our health are all at play but its a decision based on weighing up the options.

Sometimes getting a promotion get means spending less time with your family.

Changing jobs can mean a lot of extra stress and responsibility.

But that is always weighed up against the pressure to earn a wage and pay those bills.

So often its this pressure that can influence a decision, for the fear of not succeeding, or putting others close to you at risk.

But what happens if the changes you make are based solely around you and your health.

What if the job you are in is not what you want to be in.

What if the job you will love the most will take a huge leap of faith?

What if staying where you are risks your health declining?

Well its time to find out with my fabulous guest Rebecca Day, because she did exactly this.

Rebecca is now a Women's Leadership Coach and sit back and relax as we discuss her journey thus far.

If you would like to follow or get in touch with Rebecca you can

Superhero #99 - Ditching The Label And Embracing Neurodiversity | Tamzin Reid - World Class Coach

Superhero #99 - Ditching The Label And Embracing Neurodiversity | Tamzin Reid - World Class Coach

Today I spend some time with World Class Gymnastics and Trampoline Coach Tamzin Reid.

To get to that level takes time, dedication and consistency, not to mention navigating several neurodiversities.

What motivated Tamzin?

Tamzins story in her own words: ''I started my journey after my son was born. As a mum I thought that I was no good at anything and most probably couldn’t learn anything new. My son has severe ADHD. He was not easy in any way, home school etc.

He went to a school friend’s trampoline birthday party. He did so well he started lessons and although the coach was very nice, there was not a lot of real learning going on.

I thought to myself, you are already a British Horse Society IVsm in equitation, why don’t I use these skills to retrain.

So off I went and retrained as a trampoline coach. As time went on and my son got better I needed to move up the qualification ladder. Each time I had to step out of my comfort zone it was so difficult.

But I thought if I want to do this then I need to be uncomfortable. If not I will stay where I am for ever.

The amount of different emotions I went through was crazy, scared, felt stupid, too old to re train, anxious even physically sick. This was each and every course, exam or just new step.

Once the trampoline club had been up and running for a few years and we had athletes from club, county, regional and national level competition, I thought it about time to start to give back. I decided to become a tutor. Oh no here we go again with all the unwanted feelings and emotions that almost stopped me entirely in my tracks, from doing anything. Each time I had to dig deep if I wanted to take the next step. I knew deep down that I wanted to, so I allowed myself to make the decision that I was going to take each small step as it came. I’m so glad I did as I have now become a High performance coach in trampoline and a British Gymnastics Tutor / assessor, along with my BHS IVsm, NCMH & ANCEBM in equine.

I have been coaching for over 30years in both equine and trampoline. Both at high performance level and with world level athletes and coaches. Over the past year during the pandemic, I have really missed being able to coach people of all ages and abilities, so I have diversified my coaching to be here to support individuals both in and out of sport.

You know what, I have now learnt to be proud of myself. I really believe that if I can get there being severely dyslexic and having psoriatic arthritis, then I know you can to. I can help you reach your goals 1 step at a time.

Tamzin doesn't often take the limelight and is extremely humble about what she has achieved. In my view this is your time to shine!

If you would like to contact Tamzin, you can on instagram @tamzinscoaching or facebook under Tamzin Reid Coaching.

Superhero #98 - Being Doxxed On Tiktok - My Recovery From Addiction | Greyson Grimes

Superhero #98 - Being Doxxed On Tiktok - My Recovery From Addiction | Greyson Grimes

Welcome back!

This week I spent some time in the Mattcave with Greyson Grimes - A musician and popular social media personality.

Well, Greyson went viral recently when he was doxxed. If you don't know what that is, let me explain.

Tiktok megastar Elise Myers released a video where she describes a not so great experience with an 'ex' but does not name. Someone then saw the video, found Greyson and basically said a big digital 'its him!'.

To Dox: to publicly identify or publish private information about (someone) especially as a form of punishment or revenge

With that comes lots of messages and comments, threats and all sorts unfortunately a thing now in the digital world. Its also Illegal in some places to Doxx.

So now that we know what that is.. back to Greyson.

Not only has this situation given him challenges, but it has also given him a platform to tell his story.

Its a story of addiction, forgiveness, inner work and an incredible view on life now that is infectious and has definitely had an impact on me.

You can find Greyson and his music @Greyson.grimes on IG / @greysongrimes on tiktok or simply google his name!

I hope you enjoy, I certainly did!

Superhero #92 - If You Care Share - Doing What I Do To Help Those Dealing With Suicide | Matthew Smith - Co Founder- IFUCARESHARE

Hello there Superhero fan!

I first saw todays guest on the UK show 'Steph's Packed Lunch' and I knew I had to reach out.

Matthew Smith is the co-founder of an incredible non-profit organisation called 'If You Care Share'

Taken from https://www.ifucareshare.co.uk/about

Our journey began in 2005. Daniel O’Hare was 19 years of age when, without any warning, he took his own life. He had no previous history of mental health problems nor had he shown any outward signs of his intentions.

Daniel was a normal young man, who was extremely popular and well known in his local community. He had a large amount of friends and a family that loved him dearly. He enjoyed football, spending time with friends and socialising. Daniel also had a job managing a family online retail business. To this day his family remain devastated by their loss and are still no nearer to understanding Daniel’s choice.

Daniel’s brothers Matthew and Ben, along with his cousin Sarah (then aged 10, 5 and 12) hoped to do something positive to try and prevent another family suffering a similar experience. They wanted to create a lasting memory to Daniel and started If U Care Share Foundation.

The family started selling wristbands at football clubs featuring the message if u care share and raised over £50,000 for mental health charities.

In 2011, we became a registered charity with three main aims: Prevention, intervention & support of those bereaved by suicide.

Join me as we discuss the impact that Daniels death had, the legacy that has now been created with the aim of helping many other people.

Matthew is an incredibly inspiring individual, what him and his family have created is incredible, I truly hope it can keep growing and expand its reach further across the UK.

Whatever you are doing and wherever you are, I hope you enjoy this episode!

Superhero #90 -I Was Raped At The Age Of 13 - Forgiving Them Was A Huge Part Of My Healing - The Courage Cultivator | Madeleine Black

Welcome back superstar!

Now todays episode features Madeleine Black who at a young age was raped, so please if this subject is sensitive to you at all, be kind to yourself and miss it out or make sure you are in the right frame of mind.

"When I was 13, in a flat belonging to my friend’s Mother who was away for the weekend, I was attacked by two teenage American students. They held a knife to my throat and tortured and raped me many times over, for about four or five hours. I begged them to stop, but they just kicked me and laughed at me. I remember wishing they would kill me to make it all end. (Taken from www.theforgivenessproject.com )

This was the late 1970's. It wasn't until 2014 that Madeleine decided to share her story after decades of coming to terms with what happened to her.

Madeleine has since written a book, spoken at a TEDX event and spends her time helping others as a counsellor.

I wont spoil it by saying any more, but if you like a story of someone who can survive the worst? Its right here. If you would like to follow Madeleine and find out more you can by visiting www.madeleineblack.co.uk or connect with her on LinkedIn.

Superhero #89 - An Unfiltered View Into Autism and ADHD - Neurodiversity, Communicating and Strongwoman | Holly Ford

I hope you are ready for todays EXTRA HUGE episode. *TW - Mention of suicide and self harm*
I had the pleasure of speaking with Holly Ford, who is a competitive strongwoman, a mother of 2 and living with Autism and ADHD.
We talk about communication, the journey Holly has been on to understand how what works for her can be taken by others in the wrong way.
We look at the times that are overwhelming for her, what has she learnt to do to get the most out of herself, for example on competition day but also in everyday social situations.
We also discuss depression, thoughts of self harm and suicide and how drugs and alcohol played a huge part of Hollys life, also WHY they did.
It was incredible listening to someone able to be so open about some really huge and raw experiences.
Whether you are neurodiverse yourself, you know someone that is or are just curious, you will love this.
You can follow Holly on Instagram and TikTok @holfordxx
Whether this is your first episode or your 50th. Thank you!

Superhero #77 - Talk Until You Don't Need To Talk Anymore, Then Listen - Firefighter to Mental Health Warrior | Nathan Rea

<> Today we have a clash with two giant men! However odd that sounds I mean it literally, I am talking to 'Big Rig Nath' who is on a campaign to get guys talking about their own mental health. What is the motivation behind this? Well Nathan found himself in a dark place. As a firefighter, he saw some life changing things, but as a job that's very 'blokey' and 'macho' , how did he find it in himself to voice his feelings? He didn't for a start... He tried to end his own life. But.. with talking, a little action and baby steps it took time but he got there.  Nath is currently running some really interesting challenges for himself this year and invites anyone to join in, meet up with him or even DM his and be part of your circle, the people who help keep you accountable whilst looking out for you.  You can follow Nathan on instagram @bigrignath and don't hesitate to drop the big guy a message. Subscribe / Follow this podcast on Spotify or your favourite streaming service as we fly through 2023 heading towards the big 100! What should we do for it? Send me your ideas... Superhero #73 - Academia, Abuse and Atlas Stones- An Insight Into Life Working In Social Work and Family Court | Jess Jackson

Hey there!
Nice to see you again, This week I spent some time with Jess Jackson.
Before I get into it, I just want to let you know that we do talk about abuse, and other topics which could be triggering for some. So if that could be you? Be kind to yourself and choose the best time to listen for you.
Now I knew Jess primarily as she shares a strongwoman class with my partner, however it turns out that we have more than that in common.
Jess finds strongwoman an outlet for the everyday stresses she feels in the work that she does.
Working in family court, as an expert independant witness she has to make some big decisions which change lives. I cant imagine what a weight that is to carry, so we talk about that.
Hearing stories of people going through trauma, challenges whilst balancing being a mum too.
That's not the only thing Jess does, she likes to keep busy but I will save that for her within this amazing episode.
You know what? I am finding a trend here.. there are a lot of people in the strength world and the sport of strongman / woman that have a day job in CARING.
What do you think?
To follow Jess you can find her on instagram @warrioristhewoman and her website for professional Jess is

Superhero #71 - Setting Boundaries Can Be A Tough But Important Process | Elly Smith

Hello and welcome back!

Today I head to Australia (virtually of course) to speak with arguably the strongest teacher in Australia.

Elly has and does compete on the world stage, but on a day to day basis she is a primary school teacher.

How is balance achieved between a big goal and a physically and emotionally challenging job like teaching?

What was before strength sports?

We discuss how when you are centred around helping others, it can be tough to put yourself in the spotlight, the focus and put the work in.

But Elly definitely proves that there is a way, and it was a fascinating talk.

You can find Elly on Instagram @ellystrength and please take time after this to check out the other amazing episodes, there is something for everyone!

Stay Super!

Superhero #70 - Learning To Take In A World Of Giving - Finding My Way In Strongman | Katie Smith

Superhero #70 - Learning To Take In A World Of Giving - Finding My Way In Strongman | Katie Smith

Hello and welcome back!

Today I spent some time with Katie Smith - The 2nd Strongest Woman in Britain and 2nd Place winner at the Arnolds Pro competition.

Katie wanted to make a change after leaving a troubled relationship, as a single mum with 3 kids with one in a pushchair this was always going to be a challenge. She wasn't a gym goer until then, but something had to give.

In this episode you will find an uplifting story of how in this world there are some people out there who can help you make what you want happen.

Finding the right goal, and training method was a challenge.

Finding time to do it, another challenge.

Possibly the biggest challenge?

Making room for a little selfishness and investment into getting fitter and stronger, when all you have known is being a mum.

We talk friends, relationships, training, being comfortable being you and much more.

I hope you enjoy, and if you want to check out and follow Katie you can find her on instagram @katie.strongwoman (DO IT NOW!)

Until next time, Stay Super and don't forget to check out some of the other episodes!

Matt
