Is Instagram Dead? The Future of The Platform And Unique Value Propositions

Is Instagram Dead? The Future of The Platform And Unique Value Propositions

With the constant algorithm changes, questions about video suppression and the fact that many users just want chronological order brought back, it hasn't been the easiest time for Instagram. For content creators like myself, it can feel like speaking into the void between what we want as consumers and what Instagram is willing to give. With the most recent changes, it seems like Instagram is finally nailing its last into its coffin. But is it enough to say goodbye forever? In this week's episode, I share my thoughts on the platform, the rise of TikTok, and what I think this spells for the future of social media in general.

Be sure to give it a listen and subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss an upload every Wednesday! Oh, and if you choose to listen in Apple Podcasts, be sure to leave us a rating and review.

Jackson is in the influence of content creation because she seeks to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and highlight black women in the fashion, beauty, and entrepreneurship space.

Respect and Love for Content Creators’ Craft

Jamé urges each of us to respect and show love to content creators and their craft. She emphasizes the struggles influencers go through before uploading or publishing any content online. She also explains that the world only gets 30% of the whole work while the remaining 70% is sometimes not appreciated -- because the public does not see it.

Notable Quotes:

  • 70% of the work I am doing as a content creator is really not glamorous.
  • If you are the founder/owner of your brand, you are everybody’s job.

My thoughts on Black women in luxury + How I scaled my business to 5 figures and more!

My thoughts on Black women in luxury + How I scaled my business to 5 figures and more!

This week's episode is all about Blackness and luxury and entrepreneurship! Seriously, this debate has been going on forever, mostly because some people have a serious issue with Black women having nice things. In this episode, I discuss my thoughts on the entire conversation, a few designer pieces I've purchased recently and how I feel about it, living life on my own terms, and what to do if someone doesn't approve. Next, I dish on three things I've done that have allowed TheBlondeMisfit to be a five-figure business.

Haters Gon' Hate — Dealing w/ Haters And Walking In Your Purpose + More!

Haters Gon' Hate — Dealing w/ Haters And Walking In Your Purpose + More!

Hey y'all.

Today we're talking about something nobody likes to discuss: Haters. They're everywhere and in abundance, especially when you're doing what you need to do and minding your business. So today's episode is dedicated to those that count you out, challenge you, and want you to show up less than what you are meant to be. We don't listen to them, FYI. As a Black content creator, I am constantly bombarded with love from my tribe, which makes dealing with people who want to shine a not-so-beautiful light on you a little more bearable.

Haters are going to come with the territory, especially as you step into what it is you are meant to do and become. However, no worries. You can still shine and win. Check out the episode and let me know what you think.

3 Things To Consider Before Getting Your Master's Degree + Congrats To All The 2020 / 2021 Graduates!

3 Things To Consider Before Getting Your Master's Degree + Congrats To All The 2020 / 2021 Graduates!

In December 2020, I had the honor and distinction of finally graduating with my master’s degree from LIM College in New York City. My program lasted a year and a half. And a lot changed in that short period because of the pandemic, along with life changes and stress. However, I am consistently asked if getting a Master’s is something that you even should consider, and if so, what are some steps you should take to achieve your goals. I want to first preface this by saying that nobody can decide for you when it comes to your education. My mother and father instilled the values of education in me as a child. I learned later on that I suffered from extreme anxiety and stress, especially when it came to tests and tight deadlines with multiple courses.

When I graduated from Howard University, I wanted to make sure that going back to school was the decision that I wanted for myself, not a decision I made for somebody else. That being said, I waited, and I’m so thankful that I did because it was ultimately the best experience for me. With my master’s in hand, I am eyeing additional educational opportunities, whether that is an MBA program or going and pursuing my Ph.D. However, if you are considering returning to school or possibly going back for your master’s or higher education during this time, there are a few things that I think you can consider.

“How do we think about leadership in different ways?” An honest conversation with Zora Editor-in-Chief Vanessa K. De Luca

“How do we think about leadership in different ways?” An honest conversation with Zora Editor-in-Chief Vanessa K. De Luca

On today's podcast episode, Jamé sits down with none other than one of her major role models and "friend" (in the words of the talent themselves), Vanessa K De Luca. At the time of this recording, Essence Communications was under fire for an article published on Medium that delved into toxic workplace structures and the lack of safe spaces for Black women in corporate America. As companies and institutions have fought to continue to expand DEI initiatives specifically for BIPOC audiences, these conversations are more critical than ever.

About Vanessa K. De Luca:

Vanessa K. De Luca is a creative leader, driven by finding innovative ways to tell human-centered stories, guide new conversations, and grow brands.

She currently serves as Editor In Chief of ZORA Magazine by Medium. This digital-first publication centers the stories of women of color, from politics and social justice to culture, commentary and personal essays. In its first year, the magazine has grown to half-million page views per month, with a combined social media following of nearly 50K.

Most recently she served as the Editor-in-Chief of ESSENCE magazine. In this role she oversaw the editorial vision and content creation across all platforms, including the magazine, digital, social, video and live experiences. In addition, she developed editorial concepts for new initiatives including video series and TV partnerships, e-learning platforms, e-commerce and licensing, podcasts and special events.

Prior to this, her background focused on content strategy at publications such as Glamour and Life.

Above all, her greatest satisfaction comes from storytelling and feeding her insatiable curiosity. As a trusted leader in all of her roles, she can assess the market, ideate new ways to achieve growth, build and cultivate strong teams, and reinvent a brand.

An award-winning journalist and co-author of the bestselling beauty and empowerment book, Tyra Banks Beauty Inside & Out, she has been a featured guest on several national television networks, including NBC's TODAY Show; CBS This Morning; MSNBC's Morning Joe, AM JOY and PoliticsNation; CNN and more.

Birkin Bags, The Closing of Cushnie, And A Very Ghetto American Election

Birkin Bags, The Closing of Cushnie, And A Very Ghetto American Election

On this week's episode of the podcast, we talk all about the famous black female luxury design brand that has closed its doors because of Covid-19, the phenomena around celebrities and the access to Birkin bags and, of course, the US election which not only brought out a record number of voters but really exposed how Black women are the backbone of democracy in this country.

Of course, I'm only sharing my personal political opinions in this episode, but I always urge you to do your own research and to find your truth and what works for you. What I will say is that it is important to be active even in your local community and local politics, and not leave the onus of survival on the backs of Black and brown people to carry an election.

When it comes to Birkin bags, there is still a level of exclusiveness that is parallel to none. Make no mistake, just because you see more celebrities popping up with a bag doesn't mean that it's any easier to get. And of course, we have to analyze what COVID-19 and financial barriers really offer or don't offer Black designers let alone Black women designers. The number is staggeringly low for representation for Black female designers in the industry. And despite more opportunities that have recently surfaced because of racial discussions and a fashion reckoning of sorts, there is still a lot of work to be done. Cushnie is just one of many casualties of this phenomenon.

What The Fashion Industry Needs To Finally Get Its *Ish Together

On this week's episode of the podcast, Jamé discusses her three tips on how the fashion industry can finally get itself back on track.

"But when diversity is done right, the return on investment is significant. Companies with above-average diversity in management produced “innovation revenue”— or the share of revenues generated from enhanced or entirely new products or services — that was 19 percentage points higher than that of companies with below-average leadership diversity." – Vogue Business

Charging What You're Worth (And Figuring It Out) w/ Lifestyle Influencer Mattie James

On this week's episode of TheBlondeMisfit Podcast, we sat down with lifestyle influencer and entrepreneur Mattie James who dished on all things business, believing in oneself and setting your price.

I have loved Mattie's work for years and have always been inspired by her willingness to share, share, share. This episode was the actual reason why I bossed up and finally got my newsletter set up (which you guys can subscribe to right here) and I am so happy that we recorded this episode (despite some wonky tech issues) because it is so important for you to shoot for the stars when it comes to money.

Build Your Own Platforms – Creating Legacy Nobody Can Take From You

Build Your Own Platforms – Creating Legacy Nobody Can Take From You

Welcome back to another episode of TBM! Today, we're discussing building your own platforms and not depending on anyone else's. Don't get me wrong – there is nothing wrong with working that 9-5, sending off that tweet or posting that flick for the 'gram, but remember that in a world where content is king but people are always shifting the needle in response to COVID-19, you want to protect your legacy and your work.

When I built a fashion platform, I did it to stand out. Now, I can use it to open the doors that once were closed on me. Always work with your future in mind.

In today's episode, we sat down and chatted it up with Khalid Briggs, a creative director and stylist based in NYC. I've admired Khalid humble-yet-assertive stance on fashion for years and knew that he could speak to the power of doing the work and forging your own path in fashion. I especially appreciated how he discussed the cumulative nature of fashion and how you can learn so much in other categories of your life that then apply to your craft.

More info on Khalid:

Khalid Briggs is a Creative Director based in NYC. As an experienced producer, he pulls his direction from his immense love for culture, style and fashion, and visual production. He has collaborated with brands and companies such as Adidas, Samsung, Complex, Bloomingdales, Hugo Boss, Footlocker, Walmart and more. Khalid expresses his creativity through various mediums, however, no matter if it's design, styling, or creative direction, he always brings a great level of excitement, curiosity, and passion to every project he’s apart of.

What is Juneteenth And Why Do We Care?

What is Juneteenth And Why Do We Care?

Welcome back to another episode of TheBlondeMisfit podcast! This week’s episode is very special and near and dear to me because we are focusing on the celebration of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is the oldest-recognized holiday of the liberation of African Americans in the US. Although we celebrate, it’s really a day of reflection for so many of us, myself included. With the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others, I am left to wonder what is the solution … but really, how do we grieve at a time like this.

In this week’s episode, we talk allyship, activism, why this matters on a macro level but also on a micro level in fashion and beauty, therapy resources, and why we will never stop working to make an inclusive world for all.
