Body Scan Meditation

Body Scan Meditation

This Body Scan Meditation is part of the meditation series on The Courage Checklist to help support you in your courageous action. Start the year with this Body Scan Meditation and Box Breath exercise. I like this as a calming practice to use whenever I need to feel grounded. Try a meditation practice like this one a couple of times a week, to start, and see if it helps you be less stressed. This is also a good exercise when you need calm or face a decision.
Share your experiences and questions in a voicemail, and you might find yourself featured on an upcoming episode.
(This podcast is not meant as medical advice and is not presented as such. Please consult a doctor with any medical questions regrding meditation or breathing exercises.)

Holiday Help: a Meditation for Letting Go

Holiday Help: a Meditation for Letting Go

In an effort to share what I do when I'm not writing or podcasting, I want to share a seres of medatations to support you. I'm starting with "Holiday Help: a Meditation for Letting Go."

I've had a lot of very fine teachers in my life. This year, I became cerified to teach Meditation and Breathwork through the Yoga Alliance. It's a tool I love to share in person, but I want to give the auditory gift of a few minute's peace to you each week. Starting today and going through winter, I'll share these meditations. Let me know if they are helpful or if there are any subjects you'd like meditations about.

Weird Wednesdays: 5 Unusual PNW crimes

Weird Wednesdays: 5 Unusual PNW crimes

For Weird Wednesday, today's episode of our Wednesday series Mayhemporium has five of the most unusual, strange cases of crime from the Pacific Northwest. Without giving too much away, these cases are definitely ones that will stick out as some of the weirdest I've read, without being overly violent. Today's assortment includes: The Barefoot Bandit,The Portland Pooper, The Canine Con Man, The Seattle Streaker, & The Snohomish Treehouse Burglar.

Share your favorite strange crime story in the voicemail for the show. Remember, the best way to support the show is to rate, review and share with your friends. Thanks so much for listening!

Enchanted Forest/Haunted Hot Lake

Enchanted Forest/Haunted Hot Lake

The Enchanted Forest amusement is a true labour of love for the Tofte Family and a real hidden gem of Oregon. Located in Turner, Oregon, just south of Salem, it is easily accesible on I-5. I will get my name engraved on the plaque at The Challenge of Mondor some day. Or maybe buy a brick to support them- go to their website to check that out.
The Lodge at Hot Lake Springs was built at the site of a hot spring called "Ea -Kesh-Pa", originally used by the Nez Perce who lived there. It first became a lodge in 1906. It became a sanitorium, where visitors came for its healing mineral waters, and was a tourist destination for famous and regular folks alike, even visitors like Wild Bill Hickock. After it partially burned, it was only abe to use about a third of the rooms, and so gradually fell into disuse. After short stints as nusing training facilities and a nursing home, it was bought for use as a restauraunt/night club and a bath house, and then was closed due to vandalism and abandonment. It was redone in the 2000's by the Manuel family, and was reopened as a bed and breakfast, with a bronze foundry, musum and spa. It was bought by the Grande Hot Springs RV resort next, and is open now for day use and to stay. You'll have to stay there to find out the haunted part for yourself!
Photos of these two will be on @j_b_chambers on Instagram. As always , the best way to help the show is to rate and review where you are listening. Thanks for tuning in, and stay curious!

William Sullivan: Courage, Travel, and Support

William Sullivan: Courage, Travel, and Support

William Sullivan is the author of 23 books in historical fiction, fiction, plays, & even children's genres, but he is most well-known for his Oregon Hiking Guides. He’s been featured in many features & columns in papers like Oregon newspapers like the Eugene Weekly, The Register-Guard, and the Salem Statesman-Journal. I first met Bill as a shaky, nervous first-time author in Bill's capacity as the organizer of author tables at state & local fairs. Warm, kind, and encouraging, he let me have a seat at what felt like the "big kid's tables" with my first book, and I'm pleased to say he's been inviting me back ever since. Bill speaks a dizzying number of languages (listen to find out how many), travels and hikes all over the world, and he and his wife built their own log cabin in the woods... with hand tools! He wrote a great book about that, too, on a typewriter at the cabin. We chat about his writing career, travel, and his incredible support system in his wife Janell Sorenson. Find Bill at his website, https://www.oregonhiking.com, and contact him by email there as well.

Gilly The Legendary Sunshine Wizard Part 2

Gilly is not just a wizard, but a sunflowery force. I was lucky enough to sit down with their Wizardness over a couple of hours and had a magical conversation about faeries, activism, and doing what feels right for your shiny soul by spreading love wherever you can. I’m honored to have Gilly as my featured guest. This week we chat more about having the courage to be yourself on the internet, his wizard alter ego, and his book… and I get a Wizard ceremony of my own! You'll have to listen to see my new wizard name. Here's a hint (It's the name of a summertime fruit). Find Gilly on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, & Patreon, where you’ll see him under @gilly_shine. Write That Book With "Nonfic: 30"

Write That Book With "Nonfic: 30"

Do you want to finally get that book written? I hear time and time again that people have "writing a book" on their Courage Checklists. I get it! It's scary. It's terrifying actually. I wrote a new book that I hope will help. It's what has worked for me in writing many nonfiction books. I call it Nonfic: 30, because the idea is that you do small things every day to write a draft of a manuscript in 30 days. I'm introducing it today so that you can be ready to start on June 1st if you want to go on the journey with me as I give short instructions every day on Instagram in June, for FREE. That way if you want to, you can do it 100% free by following along. If you're the type who wants something written to go along with it, that option will be available for you to order a workbook as well in mid-month of June. No matter how you do it, your story is powerful! Be brave, and just start.

Join each morning in June on Instagram:

Enchantment, by Katherine May

Take care: I'm not prescribing any particular treatment or anything for anyone else. This is simply my opinion. I'd love it if you wanted to share your tips for living well while chronically ill, so please share them with me at the voicemail link or at couragechecklist at gmail dot com.

How to Define Goals & How to Be Your Own Advocate

How to Define Goals & How to Be Your Own Advocate

First up in this episode, we will discuss the importance of setting clear goals and how to go about defining them. I'll link a free download of a sample tracker called "Symptom Tracker" on the @thecouragechecklist Instagram page, click the Linktree --> "Resource Downloads" page, --> Symptom Tracker, or HERE.

For today’s second half, we’re doing a mini-course on how to advocate for yourself. I have a book coming out soon called, "The Chronic Illness Handbook: Strategies for Living Your Best Life,” and we’ll use some information from that today. Now, it's useful in other arenas if you aren’t chronically ill; learning to advocate for yourself can be one of the hardest skills you learn how to do as an adult. We all will face illness in one form or another during our lifetimes. Today, I’m sharing tips for effective communication with healthcare providers, including preparing for appointments and asking questions.

I hope this is a helpful episode. I welcome feedback as always at the IG page or at couragechecklist (at) gmail (dot) com. Please send tips, show ideas, or your checklist to the same places.

Writer's Radio: Submissions Edition

Writer's Radio: Submissions Edition

In my job as a publisher at Groundwaters Publishing, we get many submissions by those who are courageous enough to share their creativity. The writing ranges from memoir to fiction, poetry to nonfiction articles. Our motto at Groundwaters is, "bubbling up in our good time," an allusion to the nature of water and a reference to the wet and forested western Oregon area where our base is located. It is also a metaphor for our mission to help creators from all ability levels and walks of life share and improve their work. The podcast format is an opportunity to share their work even more widely.

This show is made up of recordings from the works by writers who submitted to Writer's Radio and Groundwaters Publishing. It takes a lot to write down something that has been in your heart or brain, whatever genre, and we are grateful to these authors for sharing their work. We are also very grateful to the Applegate Regional Theater, whose fine voice actors from their Reader's Theater troupe read and performed these segments. We call these "Writer's Radio," segments, named by my daughter.

The Authors include:

Remembering Quincy, by Dick Jordan

Growing up Olivia, by Olivia Taylor-Young

The Lost Angles, by Bruce Gates

Rainsong, by Bruce Gates

Dawn Lee, by Lona Feldman

Snow Day, By  Denise Bluth

Wendy Red Star & Jane Austen are Resilient

Wendy Red Star & Jane Austen are Resilient

This episode is a compilation of two of two of the most popular segments of the last year.

Wendy Red Star is  an artist whose work explores identity and the effect of colonization on Native Americans in the United States. The multi-talented, multi-media artist works with humor to share her experience and the culture of her family. She shows work worldwide, including places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fondation Cartier pour l’ Art Contempora in Paris,  and was a recipient of support from the National Endowment of the Arts. Her work is outstanding and has enriched my own study of the effect of colonialism in the United States, and I encourage listeners to check her out. Groundwaters Live is Resilient

Groundwaters Live is Resilient

Groundwaters Publishing publishes an anthology every year, of art, poetry, fiction and nonfiction by creative individuals, who range from local to our corner of Oregon to all over the world. When the annual book is released, the publishing company hosts a gala at Applegate Regional Theater so that the authors and poets can read their work to a live audience. This year, well... a different plan was needed. In the first of several parts, the authors of Groundwaters are reading their work for the podcast. It's not "live," as we used to title the event, but it's as close as we're going to get in this pandemic world of late 2020.

Groundwaters, the publishing company, has proven to be a resilient business, from its inception as a quarterly literary magazine to a full-blown publishing entity. Pat Edwards and Resilient Podcast Network host Jennifer Chambers are pleased to present this stellar, eclectic collection of talent from around the world.

Resilient with Holly Courtright

An avid traveler, dog mom, coffee lover and book addict, Holly began her adult life as an academic. With a BA in English and Environmental Studies and an MA in Human Rights she was headed for PhD stardom. Life changed as it always does and as a result she put the brakes on the PhD and has been jumping from one adventure to the next and ultimately living a very colourful life. She has traveled to over 30 countries, is very active in numerous sports, coaches Little League and sits on the Board for the local Farmers Market.

Holly is a Real Estate Advisor and the Owner of Kokoro Executive Coaching in Victoria, BC. Her interest in personal development and overcoming challenges took root during her travels. As a mainly independent traveler, she began to notice that very large problems seemed much smaller and more manageable when travelling. When forced to face problems head on and rely only on yourself to make all the decisions and then to have to live with the results, there was nobody to blame. You become the reason for everything that happens. Travelling toughened Holly up and she is thankful every single day of her life that she was born with an adventurous spirit and a love for immersive learning.

She is very interested in how the practice of coaching can assist people in a holistic sense. Her coaching focus is on feedback - learning how to effectively give it and receive it. She often quips, "you don't promote yourself so what you think is at most 50% of what matters." Known for her candid advice, Holly champions goal setting, accountability and modesty as 3 important stabilizing pillars of successful people - in their personal and professional lives. Curious in nature, coaching is a great fit for Holly. She is a self proclaimed no-nonsense type which she balances with an outstanding sense of humour (as far as she is concerned).

From a personal development standpoint, Holly strongly believes that the biggest thing standing in the way of increased resiliency is entitlement. As society continues to shift, the inability of many to manage change in their personal and professional lives is a cause for major concern. Building resiliency can be a tough process for people as they must begin to question their assumptions about themselves and the society that they exist within. The rewards that can be attributed to living a more emotionally and physically resilient life span all areas of life. The need for people to focus on their own coping mechanisms has never been more apparent. The good news....once you decide to make a change, there are people out there to help you get there.
