Holiday Help: a Meditation for Letting Go
In an effort to share what I do when I'm not writing or podcasting, I want to share a seres of medatations to support you. I'm starting with "Holiday Help: a Meditation for Letting Go."
I've had a lot of very fine teachers in my life. This year, I became cerified to teach Meditation and Breathwork through the Yoga Alliance. It's a tool I love to share in person, but I want to give the auditory gift of a few minute's peace to you each week. Starting today and going through winter, I'll share these meditations. Let me know if they are helpful or if there are any subjects you'd like meditations about.

Weird Wednesdays: 5 Unusual PNW crimes
For Weird Wednesday, today's episode of our Wednesday series Mayhemporium has five of the most unusual, strange cases of crime from the Pacific Northwest. Without giving too much away, these cases are definitely ones that will stick out as some of the weirdest I've read, without being overly violent. Today's assortment includes: The Barefoot Bandit,The Portland Pooper, The Canine Con Man, The Seattle Streaker, & The Snohomish Treehouse Burglar.
Share your favorite strange crime story in the voicemail for the show. Remember, the best way to support the show is to rate, review and share with your friends. Thanks so much for listening!
Enchanted Forest/Haunted Hot Lake
The Lodge at Hot Lake Springs was built at the site of a hot spring called "Ea -Kesh-Pa", originally used by the Nez Perce who lived there. It first became a lodge in 1906. It became a sanitorium, where visitors came for its healing mineral waters, and was a tourist destination for famous and regular folks alike, even visitors like Wild Bill Hickock. After it partially burned, it was only abe to use about a third of the rooms, and so gradually fell into disuse. After short stints as nusing training facilities and a nursing home, it was bought for use as a restauraunt/night club and a bath house, and then was closed due to vandalism and abandonment. It was redone in the 2000's by the Manuel family, and was reopened as a bed and breakfast, with a bronze foundry, musum and spa. It was bought by the Grande Hot Springs RV resort next, and is open now for day use and to stay. You'll have to stay there to find out the haunted part for yourself!
Photos of these two will be on @j_b_chambers on Instagram. As always , the best way to help the show is to rate and review where you are listening. Thanks for tuning in, and stay curious!

Gilly The Legendary Sunshine Wizard Part 2
Gilly is not just a wizard, but a sunflowery force. I was lucky enough to sit down with their Wizardness over a couple of hours and had a magical conversation about faeries, activism, and doing what feels right for your shiny soul by spreading love wherever you can. I’m honored to have Gilly as my featured guest. This week we chat more about having the courage to be yourself on the internet, his wizard alter ego, and his book… and I get a Wizard ceremony of my own! You'll have to listen to see my new wizard name. Here's a hint (It's the name of a summertime fruit). Find Gilly on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, & Patreon, where you’ll see him under @gilly_shine. You can also support him with Cameo, or by his links on his Linktree, https://linktr.ee/gilly_shine. Wendy Harrop & The Phineas Wright House, Revisited
This week we're replaying a show from a couple of years ago. Despite my lack of editing expertise at the time (forgive me), the interview is wonderful, and I'm excited to re-introduce listeners to Wendy Harrop, proprietor of The Phineas Wright House and host of the Say Yes To Yourself Podcast. This was one of our most listened-to shows!

Write That Book With "Nonfic: 30"
Do you want to finally get that book written? I hear time and time again that people have "writing a book" on their Courage Checklists. I get it! It's scary. It's terrifying actually. I wrote a new book that I hope will help. It's what has worked for me in writing many nonfiction books. I call it Nonfic: 30, because the idea is that you do small things every day to write a draft of a manuscript in 30 days. I'm introducing it today so that you can be ready to start on June 1st if you want to go on the journey with me as I give short instructions every day on Instagram in June, for FREE. That way if you want to, you can do it 100% free by following along. If you're the type who wants something written to go along with it, that option will be available for you to order a workbook as well in mid-month of June. No matter how you do it, your story is powerful! Be brave, and just start.

Take care: I'm not prescribing any particular treatment or anything for anyone else. This is simply my opinion. I'd love it if you wanted to share your tips for living well while chronically ill, so please share them with me at the voicemail link or at couragechecklist at gmail dot com.
Julie Zaruba Fountaine: The Courage to Empower
Julie Zaruba Fountaine, Well-being Specialist/Facilitator/Coordinator and Founder of EMPOWER Possible, LLC, talks with us today about empowering yourself and tips for structuring your life for doing so. We also talked about books, (one of my favorite things, of course!). I'm starting the books Daring Greatly and The Gift of Imperfection by Brene Brown and Fierce Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff after speaking with Julie. Thanks to her for the reminder! I feel like great authors come in and out of your life when you need them, particularly after a good conversation.
Look for these things that I learned from Julie in this episode:
- How the key to success is adaptability
- How important it is to not shame yourself
- The gift of letting go of attachments

Hopes & Dreams Blueprint
This episode has a more fully realized blueprint of how to take actions on hopes and dreams, once they've been made into goals. Also includes book recommendations by Anne Lamott.

How to Define Goals & How to Be Your Own Advocate
First up in this episode, we will discuss the importance of setting clear goals and how to go about defining them. I'll link a free download of a sample tracker called "Symptom Tracker" on the @thecouragechecklist Instagram page, click the Linktree --> "Resource Downloads" page, --> Symptom Tracker, or HERE.
For today’s second half, we’re doing a mini-course on how to advocate for yourself. I have a book coming out soon called, "The Chronic Illness Handbook: Strategies for Living Your Best Life,” and we’ll use some information from that today. Now, it's useful in other arenas if you aren’t chronically ill; learning to advocate for yourself can be one of the hardest skills you learn how to do as an adult. We all will face illness in one form or another during our lifetimes. Today, I’m sharing tips for effective communication with healthcare providers, including preparing for appointments and asking questions.
I hope this is a helpful episode. I welcome feedback as always at the IG page or at couragechecklist (at) gmail (dot) com. Please send tips, show ideas, or your checklist to the same places.

Stephanie Butler: The Courage To Choose
Today on The Courage Checklist I was pleased to talk with author, life/wellness coach, and community health worker Stephanie Butler. Her website bio states: "Stephanie is a registered social service worker and a life and wellness coach who has always been drawn to helping others. Her compassion springs from her own experiences overcoming addictions, depression, anxiety and trauma. With over 25 years working in the mental health field, Stephanie has learned to guide others through difficult life circumstances to set them on a path of self-compassion and self-love."
Listen in on our conversation about those topics and more today on The Courage Checklist. My favorite thing Stephanie said was about taking responsibility for the choices we make each day to make our lives better, bit by bit. She gives powerful inspiration with her story and talks about some tools she uses in her practice, as well as her writing and her work. Learn more in this wonderful talk with Stephanie! Her courage in all the things she does is evident and heartfelt.
Some things I learned:
- self love can help you conquer your hardest challenges
- positive self talk and loving kindness mediation can change your perspective entirely
- using your experiences to help others can lead you to your life's work
You can catch up with Stephanie at:
Stress Busting 10 Minutes of Meditation/10 Minute Chair Yoga
Part of my recovery process as an adult included both yoga and mediation. Although now I'm now certified to teach in both Hatha and Adaptive Yoga, it was intimidating for me at first. Yoga also became a way for me to reconnect with both mind and body and bust through daily stressors. Even as a person with disabilities that can make mobility hard, I love exercising, but sometimes my pain level makes that difficult. Not so the gentle Bo and Adaptive yoga forms, particularly the chair based yoga. I am used to teaching people of all ability levels, and today I'm sharing a short meditation and yoga that you can do from your office, chair, or anywhere that feels comfortable for you. It is generally safe for those who have joint pain as well. Do note: my voice is softer on this part as I tend to do the routine as I teach it!
(Please listen to your own body and talk to your physician about beginning any physical activity; this is merely my personal experience and I am not a doctor).

Writer's Radio: Submissions Edition
In my job as a publisher at Groundwaters Publishing, we get many submissions by those who are courageous enough to share their creativity. The writing ranges from memoir to fiction, poetry to nonfiction articles. Our motto at Groundwaters is, "bubbling up in our good time," an allusion to the nature of water and a reference to the wet and forested western Oregon area where our base is located. It is also a metaphor for our mission to help creators from all ability levels and walks of life share and improve their work. The podcast format is an opportunity to share their work even more widely.
This show is made up of recordings from the works by writers who submitted to Writer's Radio and Groundwaters Publishing. It takes a lot to write down something that has been in your heart or brain, whatever genre, and we are grateful to these authors for sharing their work. We are also very grateful to the Applegate Regional Theater, whose fine voice actors from their Reader's Theater troupe read and performed these segments. We call these "Writer's Radio," segments, named by my daughter.
The Authors include:
Remembering Quincy, by Dick Jordan
Growing up Olivia, by Olivia Taylor-Young
The Lost Angles, by Bruce Gates
Rainsong, by Bruce Gates
Dawn Lee, by Lona Feldman
Snow Day, By Denise Bluth
Sahara Rose from The Travel Coach Network

Barbara Nixon on The Courage Checklist
Chambers speaks with coach and speaker Barbara Nixon on what it takes for people to Smash Your Own Ceiling. Nixon has made a long career of helping others achieve their dreams, and shares some of her secrets on this episode. We also share a lovely Courage Checklist by friend of the show Rain Elizabeth Stickney from the Every Moment Is Sacred Podcast, and some lists from "What We Wanted To Be When We Were Kids," from @untetheredjen, @pictures_of_presence, @becomeyoucoaching, @theherowithinpodcast, @everybodysgottaeat, @remembergrams, @the_therapy_sisters, @thelatinaadvocatepodcast, @shesbravepodcast,&@sparkylifeoflia. Many of them have podcasts-- check them out! It's wonderful to be surrounded by such talented generous freinds.
One of Barbara's challenges has been learning how to speak publicly, which she shares here, with her multi-step plan to combat that fear. She says that her mission is "to help others grow and succeed," and she has done so for countless people through her podcast Smash Your Own Ceiling, (which is so valuable- give it a follow), her radio show on Harrogate Hospital Radio, and through her personal coaching and courses. Her website shares that Nixon is: "here to help ambitious Business Owners and Leaders stop holding themselves back, get out of their own way, and get the results that they really want in their business and life." The Courage Checklist Trailer
Hello and welcome to the Courage Checklist Podcast. I'm Jennifer Byers Chambers. I'm a writer, brain injury survivor, and a chronic illness warrior. This podcast is about having the courage to check off your internal list of things you think are impossible for you. It is also about how I busted through much of (but not all, yet) my own near-impossible checklist.
I started this podcast because I want to know how other people are completely courageous in their own lives, and also why we held ourselves back. It's interesting to see what we can do to reinvent our own expectations to become the fullest and most joyful versions of ourselves. You can expect an episode one or two times a week, and you also hear from listeners who've been courageous about things on their own lists.
I hope you'll find a sense of belonging here, & that you'll gain some courage or new insight to make breakthroughs of your own. Please subscribe so you can become part of the checklist family. What's on your list? And how will you be courageous today?

Wendy Red Star & Jane Austen are Resilient
This episode is a compilation of two of two of the most popular segments of the last year.
Wendy Red Star is an artist whose work explores identity and the effect of colonization on Native Americans in the United States. The multi-talented, multi-media artist works with humor to share her experience and the culture of her family. She shows work worldwide, including places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fondation Cartier pour l’ Art Contempora in Paris, and was a recipient of support from the National Endowment of the Arts. Her work is outstanding and has enriched my own study of the effect of colonialism in the United States, and I encourage listeners to check her out. Photo used for episode artwork is by Wendy Red Star, "Ashkaamne (matrilineal inheritance)," 2019. Groundwaters Live is Resilient
Groundwaters Publishing publishes an anthology every year, of art, poetry, fiction and nonfiction by creative individuals, who range from local to our corner of Oregon to all over the world. When the annual book is released, the publishing company hosts a gala at Applegate Regional Theater so that the authors and poets can read their work to a live audience. This year, well... a different plan was needed. In the first of several parts, the authors of Groundwaters are reading their work for the podcast. It's not "live," as we used to title the event, but it's as close as we're going to get in this pandemic world of late 2020.
Groundwaters, the publishing company, has proven to be a resilient business, from its inception as a quarterly literary magazine to a full-blown publishing entity. Pat Edwards and Resilient Podcast Network host Jennifer Chambers are pleased to present this stellar, eclectic collection of talent from around the world.

Resilient with Sadie Simper
Sadie says: In 2016 I was a Political Science Major with the hopes of becoming a world-renowned politician. When the election cycle hit that year, I saw firsthand how politics can drive apart friends, colleagues and even families. I felt something inside me shift that year, and I knew I needed to change my path.
I had always been interested in Art and Graphic Design, but at 21 years old I felt like I was "too old" to start something brand new. (Newsflash: You are NEVER too old to start something new.) With a bit of encouragement from my husband I purchased Adobe Illustrator and took a youtube course on how to use it. I quickly realized Graphic design was my passion and calling in life, and thus, a Designer was born.
As a business owner myself , I know the importance of creating a distinct visual representation for your brand. I help small businesses define their brand story so their customers are clear on who they are and what they do. I turn this brand story into a cohesive visual brand through custom colors, design and logos. Reach her at :

Resilient with Holly Courtright
An avid traveler, dog mom, coffee lover and book addict, Holly began her adult life as an academic. With a BA in English and Environmental Studies and an MA in Human Rights she was headed for PhD stardom. Life changed as it always does and as a result she put the brakes on the PhD and has been jumping from one adventure to the next and ultimately living a very colourful life. She has traveled to over 30 countries, is very active in numerous sports, coaches Little League and sits on the Board for the local Farmers Market.
Holly is a Real Estate Advisor and the Owner of Kokoro Executive Coaching in Victoria, BC. Her interest in personal development and overcoming challenges took root during her travels. As a mainly independent traveler, she began to notice that very large problems seemed much smaller and more manageable when travelling. When forced to face problems head on and rely only on yourself to make all the decisions and then to have to live with the results, there was nobody to blame. You become the reason for everything that happens. Travelling toughened Holly up and she is thankful every single day of her life that she was born with an adventurous spirit and a love for immersive learning.
She is very interested in how the practice of coaching can assist people in a holistic sense. Her coaching focus is on feedback - learning how to effectively give it and receive it. She often quips, "you don't promote yourself so what you think is at most 50% of what matters." Known for her candid advice, Holly champions goal setting, accountability and modesty as 3 important stabilizing pillars of successful people - in their personal and professional lives. Curious in nature, coaching is a great fit for Holly. She is a self proclaimed no-nonsense type which she balances with an outstanding sense of humour (as far as she is concerned).
From a personal development standpoint, Holly strongly believes that the biggest thing standing in the way of increased resiliency is entitlement. As society continues to shift, the inability of many to manage change in their personal and professional lives is a cause for major concern. Building resiliency can be a tough process for people as they must begin to question their assumptions about themselves and the society that they exist within. The rewards that can be attributed to living a more emotionally and physically resilient life span all areas of life. The need for people to focus on their own coping mechanisms has never been more apparent. The good news....once you decide to make a change, there are people out there to help you get there.
