44. Halleemah Nash on Making Space to Create What Your Younger Self Needed
This week’s space maker is Halleemah Nash. Halleemah is a proud product of Compton, California – a city that has greatly shaped her ambition, values, and interest in reaching back as she climbs. She is a first-generation college graduate who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Howard University, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University and Certificate in Nonprofit Management from North Carolina Central University. Her resume is impressive working with everyone from the United Nations to the celebrity brand of Kobe Bryant- but her heart has always been in creating spaces for other people to have a chance to be mentored and creating ecosystems that nurture and cultivate diverse talent . All the work she does is as she says “in service to the younger me” being the person she needed as she was growing up. The conversation talks about the importance of representation, the reason why rest is nothing less than Holy, and why sometimes we have to create the thing we most needed.

43. Peter Lublink on Making Space for Empowering International Aid
This week’s space maker, Peter Lublink, is the executive director of the non profit organization, BethanyKids. The organization helps train surgeons, and makes it fiscally possible for them to serve their own communities in 7 different African countries. The program also helps fund pediatric care for children in those areas. This conversation went everywhere from the need for us to acknowledge systemic racism to the power of movies like Black Panther and the need to not be paralyzed into inaction.

42. Brenda Davies on Making Space to Be Inquisitive, Fearless, Sex-Positive Christians
Often Making Space requires us to step out of the communities and the mindsets we previously held closely. After taking that step out it can be surprising when we discover that wholeness and integration require us to make peace with the places we once had to reject and to share new perspectives and experiences with both our old and new communities. This week’s Space Maker Brenda Davies never set out to become an expert in Christian sexual ethics/ theology, nor when she packed her bags for Hollywood did she see herself becoming a youtube star, but once she experienced an awakening she ended up becoming both and making space not just for herself but for thousands of other people who weren’t able to find spaces online. She now invites other people to become inquisitive, fearless, sex-positive, free-thinking Christians in the modern world. This conversation is filled with grace and empathy for people who have experienced and shared toxic values.

41. Season Three Opener with Kevin Garcia
Season Three of Making Spaces had to begin with one of our favorite space makers... Kevin Garcia. Kevin is a Spiritual Director and Intuitive Life Coach. Through his work as a digital pastor and public theologian, Kevin has used their writing, podcast, and YouTube Channel to help foster communities of authentic spiritual seeking, helping people pull apart bad theology and beginning to reconstruct sustainable spiritual practices. Kevin is a fantastic conversation partner and a recurring guest of the making spaces podcast. This episode includes a conversation about why we need to face mortality to truly live, and how to make space for our own grief. Kevin reminded us that grief is a lovely dancing partner and that only by being willing to dance can we move through our grief and continue to dance with all the partners life throws at us!
Content warning- You may feel your own trauma activated by some of the content of this episode- it discusses death, the use of drugs, and spiritual trauma. Please listen with awareness and listener discretion is advised.

40. The One About the Healing Power of Art with Lanecia Rouse Tinsley
How do you know when it's time to step out of “good work” to make space for “great work?” After a traumatic loss Lanecia Rouse Tinsley, this week’s space maker, took the bold leap of stepping out of creative ministry with those experiencing homelessness to become a full time creative herself. Lanecia is now a multidisciplinary visual artist and the owner and creator of LAR Art Studio. Her artistic portfolio includes a range of work in abstract painting, photography, teaching, writing, speaking. Her workshop and community art experiences challenge others to make space for their own creativity. This conversation was inspiring, and challenges the notion that art has to be a discipline of difficulty instead of a pursuit of passion.

38. The One Where Dr. Tripp Fuller Explains the Connection Between Good Theology and Beer.
How can you make diverse “ivory tower” theology interesting, and even palatable to the masses? The same way you make well crafted beer- by being intentional about the ingredients you put in, and being willing to share the process. This week’s space making guest is Dr. Tripp Fuller. Tripp is currently a professor in Edinburgh Scotland and the creator/host of the beloved podcast “Homebrewed Christianity.” He has spent his career opening up the theological palate of people by making theology approachable, interesting, and dare we even say fun. His ability to both love the church, and see its faults allows people to do the same. This is a really fun conversation about making space for the intellectual pursuit of spirituality and theological difference.

35. The One Where Laura Foster Teaches Us How to Become Human Beings.
This week on the show we had an incredible conversation with space maker and professional coach Laura Foster. Laura helps people to rethink their vocation and reclaim their human being”ness” and stop being what she calls a “human doing.” After a very successful career in the fashion industry a cancer diagnosis caused Laura to reevaluate her priorities. She ended up leaving her position to go on a search for what brought her joy and purpose. She ended up getting a masters in spiritual psychology and creating a coaching business that helps people move beyond the labels to evaluate what they really want to create and how they want to take up space in the world. This episode is filled with tons of practical ways to start reimagining your vocation and the ways that you can make space for your passions and dreams even without leaving the job you already have.

This week’s space maker Ana Kraft is an incredible inspiration. Ana is a project engineer, who happens to speak four languages (NBD,) and has developed a workwear line for women that is designed to break down barriers in STEM industries. Not satisfied with wearing safety shoes designed for men she took it upon herself to change the entire industry creating Xena Workwear for Women. As she says “What you wear has a major impact on your self-confidence, which in turn impacts a number of other job-related factors, including performance, promotability, and long-term career success.” This conversation is filled with hope and we are so glad Ana the time to sit down with us and share how we can make space for women in male dominated spaces.

Sometimes we have to make space for wonder, but how do you do that with things that are familiar? This week we talk to visual artist/spiritual director Scott Erickson about how to make space for wonder even during seasons you don’t enjoy. Social Thread seeks to help people belong and thrive as they explore their faith on their own terms. This week we talk to Rob and his codirector Robert Payne (two Robs are better than one) as they share about what a community looks like when it isn’t centered around shared beliefs. 20. The One Where Sarah talks with Colby Martin about Shifting Beliefs
What do we do when making space for ourselves and others creates a massive shift in our belief system? How can we hold onto our belonging and identity when everything feels like it has shifted? I am grateful to Colby Martin the author of “the Shift” and for this conversation about shifting in your beliefs, and finding hope in helping others in the midst of their own shift. Colby was willing to hop on Making Spaces with literally zero preparation and we had an incredible conversation about making space.
Colby wears many hats (which I can appreciate)- he is the cofounder of Sojourn Grace Collective in San Diego, and he cohosts his own podcast “The Kate and Colby Show.” He also helps to resource progressive Christian communities across the US through Launchpad partners, and as if that isn't enough he also has written two books "Unclobber- Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality" and recently “The Shift- Surviving and Thriving after Moving from Conservative to Progressive Christianity." I hope this conversation is helpful and inspiring whether you are in season of needing a space or making a space for people shifting in their belief system.

19. The One Where Sarah Talks To HerDesk Creator Dana Bakich About Creating What You Need Most.
I don’t know about you, but I think we all have those friends who make us believe the things we thought were out of reach or impossible are completely attainable, Dana Bakich is one of those people for me. Maybe it's because I have watched the musical Hamilton every day since it came out, but I think the world needs more people like Dana. People who see the unimaginable and are willing to figure out how to create it. She has a "not yet" mentality that makes you believe that you could create anything.
Dana is the founder of "Positive Equation"- a digital consultant for nonprofits, she also has worked on shows like American Idol and in marketing for large marketing firms. All of these different work environments has led her to her second business and passion, HerDesk. A sustainable and functional desk made by and for female entrepreneurs. It has been incredible to watch Dana dream and execute on that dream. Whatever Dana creates she always brings people into the story with partnership and a real desire to amplify the work of others.
The conversation with Dana highlights the gift of partnering with believing that you can create the thing you wish existed.

18. The One Where Sarah Talks to Musician Drew Brown About being a Peace Maker
Friends today on the podcast I am delighted to share with you my friend Drew Brow. Drew is an artist, advocate, pastor, poet, songwriter storyteller. As a musician he has played everywhere from large festival stages, churches, concert halls, pubs, and holding house concerts across the country. Drew lives just outside of Toronto, Canada, and engages/encourages people to think about antiracism and how to live out justice & an “open table"-minded presence in their own local neighborhood context. Whether it's spending time with people workshopping ideas around social justice and community connectedness or producing songs and albums for bands and artists – he's driven to reach people through the creative arts. Making Space for community, wonder and gratitude through music and story. Our conversation circled around the active nature of peace making. I am really inspired by Drew and the work that he is doing. I hope that you find the conversation helpful as we do the work of making space and engaging in Anti-racism.

16. The One Where Sarah talks to Dave Harder and Bryce Dymond about Shifting Churches to Community Spaces
There is no denying that 2020 has been the year of disruption- some much needed disruption. As systems of privilege are being called out through the work of Black Lives Matter and Covid 19 is teaching us that our health is tied to each other we are rethinking what community looks like and what leadership in that reality looking like. Something new is being born but we are in the liminal space- the question has become how do you make space for what could be while caring for what is?
This week I am excited to share with you my conversation with Dave Harder and Bryce Dymond two people asking that very question. Dave and Bryce help run a company called “parish properties” which defines its work as driven by concern for the environment, focused on the spiritual health of the community, financial sustainability, and social impact. They help churches think through how to develop their space in a way that is sustainable not just for church community but for the neighborhood they inhabit- this conversation could not be more timely as the idea of gentrification and colonization is rightfully at the forefront of conversation.

17. The One Where Sarah Talks to Urban Planner Jenna Tourjé about Making Spaces with People not just for People
Today I am excited to introduce to you my friend Jenna Tourjé. Jenna is an urban planner, facilitator, and community builder. She walks with communities on the path to making healthy, whole, and equitable places. Her goal is to make spaces where everyone belongs, and is involved in shaping the future of their own neighborhoods. She facilitates conversations on systematic change, community development, immigration reform, equity, and coalition-building in neighborhoods and government agencies throughout California. This conversation could not be more timely as the Black Lives Matter movement reminds us of the importance of recognizing privilege, and the necessity of taking a back seat when needed in creating space. I hope you enjoy and are as challenged as I was by this conversation.

15. The One Where Sarah Talks to Pete Enns and Jared Byas about Making Space for Differing Opinions
We live in a time that is very polarized and differing opinions seem to be suspect. We need to figure out a way forward, but it seems hard to do if we can't even have a conversation, and we debate only happens from behind computer screens. There are people trying to create spaces where differing opinions are not only welcome, but encouraged, and met with curiosity. Pete Enns and Jared Byas are two of these wonderful humans. They are hosts of the podcast “The Bible for Normal People.”
Pete a professor of Biblical Studies, and Jared a former pastor, professor, and entrepreneur have a depth of academic knowledge that most of us only dream about (ok I only dream about, but I am a nerd.) Even with all that academic knowledge and experience, they are able to take the very complex and explain it in approachable ways. Believe it or not people don’t think about the bible in the same way… ok maybe everyone knew that. They make space for people to sit in the tension of differing beliefs in a way that I find inspiring. This conversation was challenging and helpful as we try and navigate vast differences in thought and interpretation. If you haven’t heard their podcast I highly recommend it- even if you aren’t someone who would normally listen to a podcast with the word bible in the name.

You asked so here is the answer.... What's the deal with wheels on your pews? How does that make space for people? How on Earth did you convince people that this was the way forward? This is a practical episode about what it means to move from "Do It Yourself" to "Do It Together."
This is our first "Makers Episode," and it was a little tricky to make, but I am so glad we did. 11. The One where Sarah talks to Mike McHargue about Feelings and not Physics
I am delighted to share this week’s Making Spaces conversation with Mike McHargue (a.k.a Science Mike.) Mike is one of my best friends, and I always walk away from our conversations feeling grateful for time spent in deep conversation punctuated by a lot of laughter, and this conversation is no different.
Mike is a public educator trusted by millions to use empathy and deep scientific insights to help us navigate some of the most difficult parts of the human experience. Through his podcast “Ask Science Mike”, his books, and all of his speaking engagements, Mike is constantly making space for others to engage and integrate all parts of ourselves - (even the parts that make us an ass.)
In this conversation we discuss his latest book, why we need to integrate our own cognitive and emotional side, why right and left brain definitions are actually false, and why science has the power to change the world, but only if it gets better branding. I hope you enjoy this conversation and are challenged to get curious about your own feelings!

10. The One where Sarah talks about Craft Beer, Jazz and Design with Christian Piatt
What do jazz, craft beer, life on the autism spectrum, and an old auto shop in Texas have to do with making space? Turns out everything!
I am excited to share my conversation with my friend Christian Piatt. Christian is an author, podcast editor, and the owner, designer and founder of Brew Drinkery in Granbury TX.
The Brew Drinkery is a craft beer/community venue that weaves together old and new design elements, all while making space for the avid craft brew enthusiast, and those who have never heard of a hop. Christian challenges us to design and curate spaces that both reflect our own passions, but like good jazz, leave room for improv and the needs of those who will engage with the space. This pastor will be thinking about this conversation for a long time.

9. The one where Sarah talks to Jen Hatmaker about making space for our true selves.
Friends I am so excited to share with you my conversation with my friend Jen Hatmaker. If you don’t know Jen’s work- she is a speaker, hosts a really great podcast "For the love," runs an online book club, and has written some fantastic books including her newly released "Fierce, Free and full of fire" (I haven't been able to put it down!)
Jen knows a thing or two about making space for people. As Jen began speaking publicly about making space for diversity and LGBTQIA inclusion experienced a fall out with her evangelical roots that included her books being removed from Christian books store shelves. Our conversation covers the importance of making space for our true selves, so that all of our work is authentic and deeply rooted. She is such a delight, and I think you will find encouragement, and a huge challenge to move beyond the superficial versions of ourselves.

8. The one where Sarah talks about Mental Health with Robert W. Lee during a global pandemic
A lot of us can relate to a heightened feeling of stress, and general anxiety during this Covid 19 crisis, but for those who already experiencing mental health issues this time may only exacerbated already difficult symptoms. As a culture we have a lot to learn about making spaces for people experiencing mental health difficulties- I hope that this episode with my good friend Rev. Robert W. Lee will inspire great conversation and thought around, how do we make space for ourselves during this difficult time?
Rob is a pastor in North Carolina at Unifor Church- He has also written extensively for both secular and religious news outlets. You may recognize his name because he is the generations removed of General Robert E. Lee and he has used that name to be an activist in the field of racial reconciliation. He participated in the 2017 MTV Video Music awards and was on ABC’s the View where he spoke about the need to confront white supremacy and white privilege in white churches. Rob has written two books one titled “Stained-Glass Millennials” (Smyth and Helwys 2017), his second book “A Sin by Any Other Name.” Rob does all of this while making space for his own mental health as someone diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, and the mental health of others. This conversation is powerful and so important.

I am so excited to introduce to you Riley Hall a dear friend of mine, and an incredible designer. Riley "creates space" as a designer in the staging industry. He knows what it takes to make a space seem intentionally styled, but approachable. Our conversation went everywhere from how to lay out a room, to why everyone should have a signature candle.
This show will first air while we are all still experiencing social distancing and sheltering in place during the covid-19 outbreak, and so it may seem weird to talk about gathering spaces but everything we talk about pertains to your personal space- and maybe during this time you can reimagine the gathering spaces we are all going to return to.

2. The One about the Pandemic with Rev. Jeremy Smith
Nothing like launching a podcast about the need for proximity while a pandemic is causing us to have to have to distance ourselves, but during this time there are unique ways to continue to “make space” for connection and community that could last longer than the outbreak itself.
This week I talk to Rev. Jeremy Smith. Jeremy is a pastor of a church in Seattle near one of the areas that the CDC has deemed a "hot spot." He and his team had to figure out how to cultivate community during "social distancing" way before the rest of us knew what those two words meant together. Our conversation covers how to ensure you are creating circles of connection, and why that connection is so important even if you aren't a a "church" type human. To learn more about Jeremy, check out his longtime blog Hacking Christianity (HackingChristianity.net), which weaves together weird combinations of faith, technology, geek culture, and United Methodist commentary. I hope you are inspired to maintain social connection even from a distance!

1. The one where Sarah talks to Kevin Garcia about closets
Kevin Garcia is a spiritual director, intuitive soul coach, writer, speaker, and my dear friend. We talk about why cleaning out closets is so much more than just organizing, why being hospitable is more than just what can be seen, and why labels are actually important. Out of site and out of mind is not a real thing.

Trailer- "Making Spaces"
No church storage closet is left unturned as we restore, renew, and reconcile. We're talking Queer Eye meets Marie Kondo meets the Vicar of Dibley. (If Chip and Jo want to come too, I won't object.)
We live in a social and political climate that thrives on making us more and more divided. We need proximity and relationships to break down this division, but our most inclusive spaces are often run down and uninviting.... and if we are honest smell a bit like a nursing home.
This podcast will discuss how to transform the spaces where people gather — from churches, to synagogues, to coffee shops — into spaces that are inviting and make people encounter each other in meaningful ways. I bring my eclectic group of friends (think: experts on racial reconciliation and inclusion, musicians, artists, designers, athletes, comedians, actors, rabbis, pastors, drag queens, you know typical church folk) along for the ride to move us from a D.I.Y. culture to a D.I.T. culture -- Do It Together.
Join me, because when we make space nothing short of miracles are possible!
