Cultivating Self- Compassion: Nurturing Your Soul
Showing ourselves grace during times of challenge is vital to our mental health and well-being. We are most impacted by and responsible for giving ourselves what we need to manage, cope, and navigate the challenges and obstacles we face in life. While most are willing to show others compassion in their trials, it can be difficult to show to ourselves - when we need it most. How we feel about ourselves, especially in the face of difficulties, deeply impacts nearly every area of our lives. Our ability to manage, mitigate, problem solve, endure, energy, and focus are all helped or hindered by the amount, or lack thereof, of kindness and self-compassion we provide ourselves. Nurturing our soul instills hope, fosters growth, and promotes healing.

The Power of Asking “Why?”
A natural human reaction is to accept things as they are. While not always, but very often, this can develop into a habitual response unhealthy to our mental health and well-being. Challenges and stagnation in growth can occur when we accept unhealthy behaviors, our own or from others, believing we have no control over how we react and respond. Acknowledging and unpacking why we feel the way we do and challenging unhealthy patterns leads us to a deeper understanding and self-discovery.

The Truth About Compassion Fatigue
There is such a thing as caring too much. Compassion and empathy are priceless character traits that can help promote healing when we share them with others. They can also be our undoing when we overdo. If we neglect to prioritize our own self-care needs, allowing time to refuel, re-energize, and recharge, we will most likely deplete the resources needed to maintain our well-being. Soon, we find ourselves burned out, irritable, and no longer wanting to care or show compassion. Embrace prioritizing your needs and know when to let go.

The Importance of Self-Regulating Emotions
Emotions are unavoidable, and rightfully so. Experiencing our emotions can be healthy. Staying in an extreme emotional state can be detrimental to our mental health and well-being. We must learn how to self-regulate our emotions to help us navigate life. Self-regulation also helps us cope with and manage challenges. We are best served by learning to process, detach, and control our emotions internally and externally.

Peace Can Exist Amidst Turmoil
Truthfully, there is no escaping encountering challenges at some point in our lives. There are far too many external factors over which we have little to no control. These events and, at times, toxic behaviors of others can profoundly impact our peace and well-being if we allow and permit them. This opens the door of opportunity to choose instead to have peace during challenges. Like blocking out the volume of noise in a physical environment when trying to concentrate, we can also block out the mental noise causing an emotional disturbance. It begins with letting go of trying to control the external and embracing calm internally – despite the turmoil.

Know Your Value
There can be many reasons why others do not see the value we have to share. Those interested in finding will often see it quickly in our actions and behaviors without needing to point it out to them. On the other hand, it is a futile effort to try to get someone to see what they do not want or refuse to see – not to mention a waste of your precious time and energy. When we let go of feeling like we need to convince anyone we have value, we become free of the chains that hold us back from growth and living. Know that you are enough by your very existence. You matter. You are priceless. You are a miracle.

Kindness Outshines Intelligence
Intellectual intelligence is necessary and can be of great benefit in navigating life. Having knowledge can solve a litany of challenges. When it comes to emotional states and wounds, having the emotional intelligence to show kindness and compassion can go further, mean more, and promote healing far more significant than knowledge alone. Emotional wounds heal best when we apply our hearts and hear what is and is not being said far more than our words ever can or will. Even more remarkable is that kindness is free.

Walk Away from Mistreatment
If we are honest with ourselves, people in this world take joy and pleasure in causing others pain. Yes, sometimes it is unintentional or related to what they had for lunch. But more often, their behavior is out of selfishness, other times out of insecurity, and too often out of meanness and spite from those who have not faced or healed from the wounds inflicted on them.
It is easier to be mean than to heal from our wounds. For these reasons, we are best served not to take anything personally, as doing so grants the permission others need to inflict emotional pain and harm. Equally as important is to rise above the fray of vileness and never stoop down to their level of mistreating others intentionally. That has a price far too high, that must be repaid, with interest.

We Can Stop Thoughts from Dwelling
Thoughts are naturally occurring. Sometimes, they are good; other times, we are plagued by the not-so-good thoughts. This can become particularly troublesome when we allow those negative thoughts to linger longer than they should, pulling us into a downward spiral of chaos and overthinking. The good news is that we can learn to harness the power to stop thoughts in their tracks, separating fact from fiction and evicting thoughts that do not serve us to create a more healthy and productive focus.

Better to Be Alone than Tolerated
Human nature is to desire to belong, fit in, and socialize with others we enjoy being around. Humans are social mammals, after all. Isolation can be detrimental to our mental and emotional well-being, even taking a toll on us physically over prolonged periods. That said, life food that has spoiled or we are allergic to, persistent exposure to the toxicity of being around those who devalue you can wreak havoc on our mental health and well-being. In these cases, it is far better to be alone with peace than chase the wind, wasting life trying to hold on to a small piece of a relationship that is unhealthy for us.

Return to Sender
We will all lose loved ones, which tends to change us forever, depending on our relationship with them. Separate from this, we cross paths with many people in our lives that come and go. Some of those relationships end intentionally, while others end unexpectedly or unfortunately. Nearly all relationships of substance and meaning create the sting of loss when ending. Sometimes, we even feel like we cannot go on. The truth is that we existed before the relationships and, thus, can exist afterward. It may be painful at first, but it is possible if we do not lose ourselves, who we are, and our authentic selves while in the relationship. Know that no one is going to love you more than you love yourself, no one is going to care about you more than you care about yourself, and no one is going to respect you more than you respect yourself. While we may want or desire others, we only truly need ourselves. Shifting our mindsets to being our own most important person and prioritizing our relationships with ourselves as the most important relationship we will ever have serves us best. After all, we are the ones we will spend the most time with during our lives, more than any other human.

Why Ask Why
Many factors can influence human behavior. These can include childhood trauma and experiences, environmental factors, family constellation, and genetics, which can all impact our temperament development and self-worth. Even under ideal conditions while growing up, exposure to toxic human behavior, when no longer protected by the haven of our family environment, can wreak havoc on a person and influence their behavior. Notwithstanding psychological and personality disorders, the reasons for toxic behaviors can range from trauma responses, insecurity, lack of character or values, meanness, or the driving need to “get even” for perceived past wrongs – entitlement. For the protection and preservation of our well-being, we are best served to know the “what” others are capable of that can impact us over the “why.” Unless we are closely connected with the individual, learning the why can take time and investment, usually requiring transparency, authenticity, and vulnerability, which are unfortunately rarely embraced or leveraged. Protecting yourself and your mental health should be a top priority, like defensive driving, always remaining alert, and anticipating that other drivers may be prone to unexpected behaviors at any moment, providing you time to engage in (emotionally) evasive maneuvers to remain out of harm's way.

Go Away
Energy is a priceless resource. Our energy can attract or repel. While energy does regenerate, we do not have an endless supply at any given moment. When we endure the energy-draining disregard of being tolerated rather than accepted or respected, this can rob us of the energy needed to manage, cope, and navigate life. We gain nothing by trying to force matters with others who do not want or value us in their lives. You are best served to cease accepting behaviors from others that fall beneath the incredible soul that you are. You deserve to be valued, respected, appreciated, and celebrated – for who you are, not just based on what you can do for others. If that is not occurring where we are, we are better off going away from that place to discover our purpose first. Then, your tribe will find you. It is better to be a tribe of one than surround yourself with a pack of distrustful, selfish wolves.

Life Choices We Own
We get the honor of meeting many people in this life. Most of those we cross paths with are temporary or seasonal, with few lasting a lifetime. Some encounters enhance our lives, while others leave wounds and scars. Only we can and should determine which relationships best serve us, our mental health, and our well-being. While it may be true when it comes to material objects that having some degree of is better than none, that does not hold for toxic relationships. We are better off alone than to be continually exposed and subjected to toxicity in unhealthy relationships. We find peace when we learn to be our own best friend, loving and cherishing ourselves first and more than others. This mindset can attract the type of energy that we desire in relationships and serve us well.

Participation is Optional
In life, we all make mistakes. Negative behaviors can stem from several factors, like past trauma and psychological or personality disorders. Try as we may, we cannot control another human being – they must want to change for change to occur. At best, we may be able to influence. When we attempt to compel or demand forcefully, the change tends to be short-lived when forced under duress. As adults, we get to live with the consequences of our decisions. Know that people lie. But as Maya Angelou once said, when in their behaviors, people tell you who they are, believe them! You have no obligation to participate in the negative behaviors of others. To protect and preserve your mental health and well-being, you should only feel obligated and be vigilant about setting and maintaining firm boundaries when dealing with toxic behaviors.

Anger is Self Punishment
Generally speaking, we are best served to acknowledge and allow ourselves to experience our emotions. Anger is one of those natural emotions. Leveraged correctly, it can empower us to pursue a just cause or purpose. However, as with any emotion, in excess, anger can become a trap, a pit, or even a grave. Being quick to anger or dwelling there for extended periods can rob us of our creativity and problem-solving abilities. Our decision-making can become skewed, potentially putting us at significant risk. This becomes even more futile when we are consumed by anger over the things we do not control, namely the behaviors and actions of others. When we allow others to use our emotions against us, we enable them to distract and disable us, thus robbing us of our peace and well-being. We are best served to let go of what we do not control and turn our focus to the lesson to be found in what happened instead of remaining upset over what happened.

Divorce from Mistakes
Making mistakes is something every one of us do. It is a normal part of progress, growth, and personal development. They can provide us with prime learning opportunities. Regardless of the size of the mistake or how much time, energy, or effort we put into making it, no amount of continuing down a path that does not serve us will make the mistake better or no longer a mistake. Most likely, that approach will only cause more harm than good. When it comes to our mistakes, we are best served to acknowledge and embrace them. Growth can be found in looking for the lesson or learning to be had, forgiving ourselves and others, regardless of whether they apologize, and then letting go of the mistake to move forward. Healing from the mistake is aided by applying the learning(s) we gained.

Know Your Giver Limits
It often feels good to help someone else. Doing so can feed our altruistic self, enabling us to feel good about ourselves. Kindness expressed and shared can not only help others heal but can often help in the healing process of our own wounds. Motives for giving can vary from pure intentions, a distraction from pain, to hidden agendas that can create more harm than good. That said, it is also crucial to know that the reality of life is that there are some who prey on the kindhearted, those who love to give, to extract and take from those giving souls, without care of the impact on the giver. We are best served to know our why when giving. Know your limits - when the return becomes negative, and refrain from turning a blind eye to the truth that people will ill intentions exist and seek out those with good hearts. Give as your heart may lead, but also listen to your instinct and use discernment to ensure you are not being taken advantage of. We are not called to be of support to everyone. Ensure the gifts you were given to give reach their intended recipients.

Knowledge is Good. Empathy is better.
Speaking confidently based on the direct knowledge obtained is often viewed as being a subject matter expert. In truth, some who lack the knowledge but possess the charisma and skill to say things in a confident manner are oftentimes indistinguishable in appearance from those who have worked hard to gain their knowledge. Using knowledge gained to advance the good of the whole is a noble cause and commendable. That said, being outspoken can vary in one’s motive and purpose. An altruistic purpose is to have a positive human impact. A selfish or self-serving motive is to be seen and gain attention for oneself. The root of both of these begins and resides in the heart. That is where our purpose and passion are born: to be a gift to help lift others or aim to raise attention for our one selfish consumption. One of these promotes healing, while the latter can cause further wounds. Know the difference. Then, strive to be and make a difference.

Apathy Harms, but Empathy Heals
The effect of physically harming someone is generally easy to spot. However, we do not need to inflict physical harm to wound others. Mental, emotional, and psychological harm can be far more challenging to see, often hidden, and sometimes, our awareness only occurs when the wounded share that they have been hurt. In the minority are the small people who intend to inflict emotional wounds on others, usually to mask their inner turmoil and insecurities. More often, however, are the unintended wounds inflicted by the absence of kindness, compassion, and empathy when we fail to observe, see, or understand how our actions, lack of judgment, selfishness, or self-centeredness impact others. These wounds can be profound and even last a lifetime, yet more often than not, they are entirely avoidable when we are intentional with our empathy. Apathy in close relationships tends to cause significant harm, while empathy as a top priority promotes healing and well-being.

What You Can Control
There is very little in life that we control outside ourselves, our behaviors, and our actions. Experiencing the estimated thousands of thoughts we face daily can feel overwhelming. We are best served when trying to change our behaviors by doing so at the thought stage, before developing an emotion around the thought, and before we act on it. We can learn to manage our thoughts instead of them controlling us. When practiced with intention, over time, we can reduce the frequency and intensity of harmful thoughts by recognizing those that are impractical, causing us to feel anxiety, upset, or low mood. One way to achieve this is by replacing negative thoughts, when they occur, with other thoughts. It can be a completely different subject, thoughts of gratitude or thankfulness. By practicing the technique of thought-stopping and replacement, we stand a greater chance of changing lanes from thoughts that do not serve us to those that can help us. This does not imply that we can eliminate all negative thoughts - that is unrealistic. Nor is it to say just stop thinking negative thoughts, and everything will suddenly improve. Thoughts are a naturally occurring process that can occur in our subconscious mind, where often, we are unaware of the storm brewing until it is upon us. What we can control, however, is the quantity, duration, quality, and impact of our thoughts by being intentional about shifting to productive thoughts, which help us experience greater peace and well-being. Making a conscious effort to develop constructive and helpful thinking habits can create more of the thoughts we want, reducing those we dislike that are harmful to us. No one has more control over this process than ourselves - we alone hold the key to that door.

It’s Not About You
More often than not, what we experience in life helps to shape our views, thoughts, and behaviors. This can lead to the creation and existence of internal conflicts. Many times, when we encounter toxic behaviors from others, it is a direct result of their internal conflicts stemming from their traumas and life experiences. In other words, they are hurting, struggling, and feeling less than on the inside. It is helpful to remember that when we encounter mistreatment without cause or proper justification, their actions and behaviors have far more to do with the war they are waging internally than it has to do with you. To stop taking things personally is a strong and nearly impenetrable shield of protection against the pain resulting from the misgivings of others who are at war with themselves.

Why Keep Going to the Circus
How often do we ask ourselves “why” when the behavior we experience from others is the same as it has always been? As creatures of habit, we tend to gravitate toward familiarity, even when it is unhealthy and even painful for us. When we fully embrace that we do not control others and that their behaviors predominately stem from their life experiences, we begin to free ourselves from the revolving, perpetual circus the toxic behaviors of others can have on us. By accepting people are who they show themselves to be and shifting our focus from what they are doing to what we can do for ourselves, our mental health, and our well-being, we realize we have no obligation to continue to go to the circus and become flustered by their flying monkeys.

Let Go to Grow
Not much in life is permanent - not even our very own lives. We may desire and be passionate about holding on to something, but that in and of itself does not mean it will remain or even last as long as we like. Our becoming too comfortable accepting less than we should for ourselves, even with the unpleasant, can lead to complacency and stagnation. Sometimes, our growth depends on our willingness and ability to let go of what does not serve us or is hindering our path. Embracing rather than resisting positive change is one way to accomplish this sometimes difficult transition. This pathway can lead to the life and the person we want to live and become. If it’s gone, needs to go, hurts too much, or is blocking your progress, let it go and walk away to grow.

Focus Internally, Not External
Most have probably heard the saying, “Small minds talk about people, average minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas.” While the interpretations may vary, the spirit is meant to point out that if we consume ourselves by looking down on, finding fault with, and judging others, therein lay the extent of our world, existence, and impact - small. When we focus on only the flaws in others, we distract ourselves from seeing, embracing, developing, and refining our very own opportunities for growth, development, and improvement. Even standing still can mean going backward in a world of perpetual motion. If those we judge seek to improve and better themselves, it won’t be long before they surpass us while we are so busy trying to tear them down. This, in turn, can potentially create a vicious cycle we fabricate of persistent envy of their progress hindered by our self-created stagnation. Being the bigger person and concentrating on the areas we can improve, grow, and develop serves us best in helping us live up to our fullest potential instead of down to just above that which we find repugnant or beneath us. The next time you are tempted to find fault in others, ask yourself which area(s) you can do or be better in instead of sharing your opinion of someone else’s perceived shortcomings with them. Growth is found in letting that higher focus guide you to a better version of yourself – one that you can be proud of and live up to.

Who Do You Really Need?
Many have come to believe that they need others to complete them. As humans, yes, most of us naturally desire belonging, socialization, and companionship. The question to ask ourselves is at what cost?’ Having a quality support system for the good times and the not-so-good can be highly beneficial. It can also be highly unhealthy, detrimental, and even dangerous to our mental health and well-being to become dependent on those who only have their own selfish interests in mind with little to no regard for our own. Know the difference between people who want you around only for what you can do for them vs. those who desire to be a part of your life, willing to make and hold space for you simply because of the person that you are, with nothing for them to gain, no need for you to do, give, or sacrifice for them. Like unconditional love, this type of motive-free relationship, rare as it they are to find, is priceless. Always know that the most important person you need, the one you can depend on, is yourself.

Apology Accepted Access Denied
An inevitability in this life is that we will experience times when someone does something that we find hurtful. Sometimes, it is intentional on their behalf, while most times, it is unintended. That does not change the fact that it can be painful. If we are being honest, we all make mistakes. There is a saying that goes; the first time is a mistake; the second time is a choice. When we experience behaviors that wound us and address that behavior with the person, hopefully, they apologize with remorse, and the behavior changes - does not repeat. However, in cases where their chief concern is regret for having been caught and called out or their behavior is repeated again and again, we are then best served to accept the apology and let go of the negative baggage of unforgiveness. However, we have no obligation to allow the person access or reentry into our lives. To deny access is not a petty act of holding a grudge but, instead, an act of self-care. We preserve and protect our mental health and well-being by creating and upholding boundaries between us and those people, places, and things that repeatedly disturb our peace, be it intentional or unintentional. Denying access to bad actors is a way of granting kindness to yourself.

Just Be Better Than You Thought You Could
Environments where there is increasing emphasis being placed on external influences, significance seeking, and the undo pressure to be “better” than everyone else can produce high levels of toxicity to our peace and well-being. While competition in some forms can be healthy, persistent and unnecessary comparisons to others can be harmful to us, going so far as to rob us of motivation, inviting discouragement, and even creating a false sense of self-concept of who we think we should be. We are best served by setting our own bar and striving to achieve. Comparing our current selves to how far we have grown and where it is that we want to grow to, for, about, and by ourselves. Leaving others out of that equation reduces the risk of distraction and helps to increase personal growth.

Let Go of Toxic Connections
Not all relationships are healthy for us. While this may seem obvious, it is important to also note that we are under no obligation to continue to maintain, support, or participate in relationships that have negative impacts on our mental health, peace, or well-being. This includes casual acquaintances up through family members. The hard truth is that the humans who are closest to us can cause us the most harm. While all relationships naturally have their ups and downs, relationships that leave us feeling drained, depleted, and even defeated after most interactions are unhealthy for us and most likely toxic. Learning to become aware of the mental impacts of our relationships and then creating boundaries and even distance to protect ourselves is not mean or selfish behavior but a healthy form of self-care.

The Importance of Choosing Your Inner Circle Carefully
Inevitably, as we progress forward in our healing journey, things will change, we will change, and as a result, our relationships with others may also change. Some for the good, others may fall away. In some cases, they will choose to leave, while other times, we must decide to move on – for our own good and well-being. This is all part of the healing and personal development process. As we become more intentional and willing to invest in ourselves in doing the work, as we seek to improve our lives for the better, over time, we evolve. This may not sit well with everyone. Heal anyway! If you find yourself struggling with the decision of whether to continue to invest in or let go of relationships during this crucial self-care process, one strong indicator to consider is whether they are celebrating your growth or judging you for it. Being judged by others for trying to better ourselves seldom, if ever, serves us well. You may even find that your inner circle shifts into becoming an inner triangle, straight line, or maybe even just a dot - you. Grow anyhow.
